Virginia Tech
Virginia Tech is a proud program that has fallen on hard times. Remember from 2004-2011 this was the ACC’s premier program under Frank Beamer. Since then it’s been a revolving door of coaches, with a brief peak in 2016 and 2017 where the Hokies won 19 games. Since 2020 they haven’t won more than 7 games in a season, and Virginia Tech had to make a true commitment to getting better. They went out and hired former Penn State James Franklin. Franklin is a winner. He won at Vanderbilt, and won at Penn State, just not quite enough for Penn State fans in the end, though.
Will Go 9-3 (6-3) if:
Virginia Tech can quickly take to James Franklin as head coach. When Franklin turned Vanderbility from 2011-2013 they were arguably the worst program in the SEC. He rebuilt Penn State after scandal and a mediocre couple of years under Bill O’ Brien. He’s going to win at Virginia Tech eventually. The early part of the schedule is where the Hokies season will get made. VMI, Old Dominion, at Maryland, at Boston College then Pitt gives Virginia Tech a shot at a 5-0 start. There are a number of Penn State transfers joining Franklin, and if they can get integrated to Virginia Tech, the Hokies could win a lot of games. I think Brent Pry is most suited to coaching defense, and that might make Virginia Tech one of the better defensive teams in the ACC.
Will Go 4-8 (2-7) if:
QB Ethan Grunkemeyer struggles. Virginia Tech’s offensive line had issues last year, and if it has problems still this upcoming season, Grunkemeyer could have a lot of problems. Old Dominion has been tough for ACC opponents for years. Then that is followed by road games at Maryland, at Boston College, then Pitt and at Cal. Slip up, and Virginia Tech could be looking at a 2-4 or 3-3 start. The back half of the schedule is tougher with games at Clemson, at SMU and at Miami and a rivalry game with Virginia. James Franklin will turn Virginia Tech into an ACC contender, but it might not be this year.
