ACC 2026 Football Schedule

North Carolina

North Carolina football, if we’re being honest, is kind of a national laughingstock right now. On the field, they were awful last year, going 4-8, and of course there are the Bill Belichick off-the-field stories. We don’t have to get into that, but anyone who follows college football knows they’ve been a distraction and they hardly make UNC look like a serious football program. How does UNC get out of this downward spiral? Well, we can be sure of one thing: Bill Belichick didn’t win 6 Super Bowls as a head coach without knowing the game. If he can show any level of progress, he’ll get more time to figure things out.

Will Go 6-6 (4-4) if:

They beat TCU in the opener. Last year, TCU was a measuring stick game in the first game of the season for UNC, and the Heels failed the test miserably. It was an indication of just how bad the Tar Heels would be. If UNC can steal that game with a decent TCU squad, it would be a great sign that the Heels could be a bowl-quality team. Last year the defense ranked in the top 40; that needs to remain, because the offense was one of the worst in the country, ranking 130th. Bobby Petrino is the new OC, and he’s a quality coach who’s had a lot of success in the past. If he can make a difference in that offense, then UNC could squeeze out 6 wins, because it’s a brutal schedule.

Will Go 2-10 (1-7) if:

The Tar Heels start the season 1-5. A 1-5 start is certainly possible. Does this start get tougher anywhere in the ACC? TCU, then a break with East Tennessee and a game at Clemson, hosting of Notre Dame, at Pitt, and at defending ACC Champ Duke. The second half of the schedule has Miami, Louisville, at Virginia, and rival NC State. Wow… I expected the offense would improve under Petrino, but the defense could easily slip, and if the Heels start 1-5, is Belicheck even still around? The Tar Heels could have a worse record than last year.
