We are starting to get an idea of ACC men’s basketball coaches that might be feeling the hot seat and which ones are in good shape. We’ll start with coaches 10-18
What does that look like just past halfway into the season?
We go from the coldest to the hottest.
0 – Ice Cold
1 – Still cool
2 – There’s smoke
3 – Getting Warm
4 – On Fire
5 – Start working on the resume
Mike Young, Virginia Tech = 2
The last time Mike Young made the NCAA tournament was 2022. There was an ACC Title in there, but it’s been a while. Mike Young can coach. He wasn’t getting enough financial support, but he needs a strong season this year. So far 13-4 (2-2) works.
Hubert Davis, UNC = 2.25
Hubert Davis will probably have a permanent hot seat whispers until if and when he wins a national title. Such is the case at a basketball school with expectations as they do at UNC. He does have a top 20 team this year that should easily make the NCAA tournament.
Mark Madson, California = 2.5
Cal is off to a 13-4 (1-3) start in Mark Madson’s 3rd year. They missed the Big Dance in his first two years, and even with a win over UCLA, they are behind the 8-ball yet again to make the NCAAs. 3 years without a NCAA appearance and hot-seat talk will ramp up.
Adrian Autry, Syracuse = 2.5
A lot of ACC coaches are in that 3rd and 4th year where something needs to happen. Autry is in year 3 and trying to make the NCAAs for the first time. Syracuse has been inconsistent most of this year, but at 11-5 (2-1) is a team that seems to be playing better and ready for a real push. The beat Tennessee earlier in the season.
Michah Shrewsberry, Notre Dame = 2.75
Year 3 – time to make the NCAAs. If Notre Dame can hold together until Marcus Burton returns this could be a really dangerous team down the stretch.
Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech = 3
Damon Stoudamire is in his 3rd year at Georgia Tech, and the Jackets, barring a miracle, will miss the NCAA tournament yet again under Stoudamire. Initially, it looked like the former NBA star would be able to inject some energy into the program. It hasn’t yet happened, and the natives are getting restless.
Steve Forbes, Wake Forest = 4.25
Steve Forbes is an ACC coach who’s had plenty of time to fix things. He’s been at Wake Forest 6 years, and has exactly 0 NCAA appearances. Wake Forest is more competitive than Boston College, but he’s also had more talent. He’s probably the most underachieving coach in the ACC.
Earl Grant, Boston College = 4.5
Earl Grant seemed like a good hire 5 years ago, but it just hasn’t worked out at Boston College. Home games look like Covid year games, and he’s never finished higher than 10th in the ACC.
Jeff Capel, Pitt = 4.75
Jeff Capel has been at Pitt 7 years, and there’s been one NCAA appearance. That was 4 years ago. The Panthers are winless in the ACC at 0-3 and 7-9 overall. The program is going nowhere, and Capel has had plenty of time to get things straight.
