ACC Men’s Basketball Coach Hotseat Rankings through 3/4 through season (10-18)

We are starting to get an idea of ACC men’s basketball coaches who might be feeling the hot seat and which ones are in good shape. We’ll start with coaches 10-18, and we’ve had some movement since earlier in January.

What does that look like just past halfway into the season?

We go from the coldest to the hottest.

0 – Ice Cold

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Hubert Davis, UNC  = 2

Beating Duke is always good for a UNC coach, and Davis just did that. At 20-5 (8-4) with 5 Q1 wins the Heels are a virtual lock for NCAAs, but it’s UNC. Just making the NCAA’s isn’t enough; Davis might need to reach 2nd weekend to feel really good going into next year.

Mike Young, Virginia Tech = 2.25

The last time Mike Young made the NCAA tournament was 2022. There was an ACC Title in there, but it’s been a while since something positive happened around the Hokie program. At 17-9 (6-7) and a NET in the mid 50s, the Hokies NCAA chances are slipping away. You simply can’t beat Clemson and then follow it up by getting destroyed at home by FSU.

Mark Madson, California = 2.5

Cal is 17-6 (6-7) start in Mark Madson’s 3rd year. They missed the Big Dance in his first two years, and if they miss again, that’s 3 years without an NCAA appearanc,e and hot-seat talk will ramp up. Cal is on the fringes of the bubble, but on the wrong side right now.

Adrian Autry, Syracuse = 3.5

Autry is in year 3 and trying to make the NCAAs for the first time. Syracuse has been inconsistent most of this year, but at 15-11 (6-7) they haven’t made a move forward since our last hot seat rankings. The beat Tennessee earlier in the season, which proves what this team could have and should have been.

Michah Shrewsberry, Notre Dame = 3.75

Year 3 – time to make the NCAAs. Notre Dame couldn’t hold things together while Marcus Burton was out. 12-14 (3-10) is simply unacceptable.

Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech = 4

Damon Stoudamire is in his 3rd year at Georgia Tech, and the Jackets are now arguably the worst team in the ACC. Though Boston College will make a case. At 7 games, the Jackets have the longest losing streak in the ACC, and are 11-15 (2-11). An already bad team is getting worse as the season progresses.

Steve Forbes, Wake Forest = 4.25

Steve Forbes is an ACC coach who’s had plenty of time to fix things. He’s been at Wake Forest 6 years and has exactly 0 NCAA appearances. Wake Forest is more competitive than many of the teams on this list, but at 13-12 (4-8) the Deacs at large chances are dead yet again.

Earl Grant, Boston College = 4.75

Earl Grant seemed like a good hire 5 years ago, but it just hasn’t worked out at Boston College. 9-16 (2-10) with 6 losses in a row and counting. Grant’s time at BC seems to be nearing an end.

Jeff Capel, Pitt = 5

Jeff Capel has been at Pitt for 7 years, and there’s been one NCAA appearance. That was 4 years ago. The Panthers are 9-17 (2-11). That’s tied for the most ACC losses and with the single most total losses of any ACC team. The program is just dead, and Capel has had plenty of time to get things straight.
