Louisville had not played a P4 opponent this year, but was 3-0. They had not even left Louisville yet. If you were skeptical of the Cardinals so far, that’s OK, A lot of us were. A road game at Pittsburgh was going to tell us plenty more about Louisville. Pittsburgh isn’t a great team, but there was enough talent there to cause teams problems.
Potentially good teams should beat Pitt, and mediocre ones don’t. Sometimes, even mediocre teams beat Pitt like West Virginia did a few weeks ago.
Down 17-0 in the first half, and 27-17 at the half, it appeared the Cards were more pretender than contender, but Louisville had something to say about that.
QB Miller Moss was spectacular in the 2nd half and finished with 339 yards passing and 3 TDs. The Cardinal’s defense shut down the Pitt offense to the tune of 0 second-half points, and ended up winning 34-27.
The margin of error for winning and losing is as thin as I’ve ever seen it. Clemson has two last-play losses. SMU has multiple 4th quarter blown leads, so does Pittsburgh. Florida State lost at Virginia weeks after destroying Alabama. Three of Georgia Tech’s five wins have been decided in the final 2 minutes of a game. That’s just in the ACC.
For Louisville to get to 4-0 is noteworthy. They are one of only three undefeated teams in the ACC, and only the game at Miami will they be decided underdogs.
Jeff Brohm is 22-8 in 30 games at Louisville. They have been one of the ACC’s most consistent winners the last 3 years, so why should I doubt that Louisville won’t be an ACC factor the rest of the way after today?
I wanted to see what they did against Pittsburgh, and it was a struggle early, but Louisville answered the bell.
Resurgent Virginia is another test next week, prior to that Miami game, and the winner of that game could find itself in a great position to make a run to Charlotte.
