When NCAA baseball selection time comes at the end of May, we might look at a certain Friday night early April as the one that sets the tone for who makes it, who doesn’t, and where they are seeded.
#3 Georgia Tech closed out the series against #5 FSU with an 8-3 win. Jackets for the sweep Saturday, but Georgia Tech has proven that at their best, they are the most complete team in a stacked ACC. When you’re the most complete team in the ACC, you are one of the 2 or 3 most complete teams in America. Georgia Tech is ranked in the top 3 for a reason. FSU is also very good and capable of getting to Omaha, but while they have quality arms, they aren’t close to Georgia Tech offensively.
Clemson was a pre-season top 25, that had been on the most disappointing teams in the ACC, took down a top 10 UNC team 9-5. That was Clemson’s 4th win in 5 games, as they are starting to look like an NCAA-caliber team. They MUST take the series, but getting that first one was massive. The sit 23-12 (5-8)
UNC will get its shot at Georgia Tech next week, but that’s a legit top 10 team still.
Louisville has been the conference’s most disappointing team, replacing Clemson now. They got thumped at home 12-2 by Stanford to fall to 19-15 (5-8). The Cards are up against it, and if they lose the series, that might be it for Louisville.
NC State got brutal news with the season ending injury to star pitcher Jacob Dudan, but they’ve reeled off 5 straight wins, including a 10-4 win Friday over Duke. The panic button may have prematurely went off when NC State lost 5 of 6 to Georgia Tech and FSU, but those are two of the best teams in college baseball. The Wolfpack still has a chance to host.
Why isn’t 26-8 (7-6) Miami ranked? 13-2 in their last 15 games.
This league is deep and really good; it could be a 10-bid league.
