There was a nightmare scenario developing in the ACC. Duke at 5-4 (4-1) controlled their destiny to the ACC Title game. If they were to win it, the ACC could have been at risk at not getting a team to the playoff.
Virginia saved the ACC from a disaster and enhanced their own chances of reaching the ACC Title game. Following last week’s tough home loss to Wake Forest, the Hoos faced a Duke team many thought could knock them off. QB Chandler Morris’s status was in question. If Virginia had lost, not many would have not been surprised.
Virginia would have none of it.
They were on a mission.
Virginia raced out to 31-3 lead and cruised to a 31-17 win. QB Chandler Morris did play and threw for 316 yards, but it was the defense that came up with a truly stellar performance. It might have been the defensive performance of the year in the ACC.
They held a high-powered Duke offense to just 255 total yards with 42 on the ground.
As opposed to Louisville, which lost its last 2 home ACC games to fall out of the ACCCG race or a Georgia Tech team that needed more Haynes King heroics to beat Boston College, Virginia closed the door on Duke early.
They are now very much alive in their goal to reach the ACC Title game.
Tony Elliot did a great job, putting last week’s loss behind Virginia. The Hoos are a resilient team that played one of their finest games of the season at the right time.
Sometimes you just have to seize the opportunity, and that’s what Virginia did.
