The three biggest ACC football questions of the week. Here we go for Week 13.
Will Georgia Tech clinch its spot in the ACC Championship Game this weekend?
This is not as easy a question as it should be. Georgia Tech at home and at night 9-1 gets a 7-3 Pitt coming off a Notre Dame loss where they weren’t even competitive. They have a Heisman-caliber QB playing in his final game, but it’s the Georgia Tech defense that has looked like one of the country’s very worst in their last two times out. That includes having a BYE week in between. Pitt has a solid offense and a freshman star at QB, who could light Georgia Tech up. If Georgia Tech even had a mediocre defense, this would be an easy call, but the defense is about 4 levels from mediocre at the moment.
How big a statement will Miami try to make against Virginia Tech?
Miami has got two games left to impress a committee that has trouble understanding that head-to-head results matter. If the Canes get the chance, they are going to plaster Virginia Tech. The game is at Lane Stadium, and the Hokies might feel rejuvenated themselves after the hiring of James Franklin. I just get the feeling Miami has nothing to lose, and it’s a matter of go big or go home.
Who gets bowl-eligible NC State, FSU or Duke?
Three teams are at 5-5, all needing 1 win to get bowl eligible. NC State and FSU play each other, and Duke goes to UNC. NC State was in a tough spot going on the road to a desperate Miami, but at home they are a different team. They have only lost 1 game at home, and while FSU is playing a bit better, they haven’t won a road game this year. The game is at night, too, and Carter-Finley is oh so tough at night. Duke is one of the more disappointing teams in the ACC this month. They had a shot at the ACCCG were a no-show against Virginia. They have to play better against UNC don’t they?
