If you watched the last two nights of football in the ACC you saw a complete contrast in offensive execution. Thursday night, the first game ineptitude of new OC George Godsey in a train wreck of an offensive performance against an underdog Colorado team was on display. Then Friday night was a Miami team that played with precision and near-perfect execution with a new QB against Stanford.
Stanford is improved. QB Davis Warren is going to be a problem in the ACC, and they look well coached. The problem with the Cardinals is they lack athleticism and depth. They aren’t going to threaten the top half of the ACC, but will they pull an upset or two? You’ll see it’s coming.
That said, Miami looked every bit the part of a national title contender. 45 points and 548 yards, most of which were gained in 3 quarters. QB Darian Mensah was 27 of 30 for 400 yards and 5 TDs. Malachi Toney looked like the best offensive player in college football. His stat line was ridiculous – 12 catches for 233 yards and 3 TDs. Miami didn’t even need to use RB Mark Fletcher much.
The Canes won’t break a sweat until October at least. Wake Forest might make them work a bit, but no disrespect to the Deacs; that will be only if Miami is not focused. On Friday night, there was no indication that Miami was anything but supremely ready for the season to get underway.
The offense is absolutly explosive and will be one of the best in the country all year. The defense was also solid, but a drop-off has to be expected at least in the short term with all the losses in talent. There wasn’t a ton, and it will get better. It’s only game 1, but there was nothing that said Miami isn’t the team to beat in the ACC and maybe nationally.
