We are starting to get an idea of ACC men’s basketball coaches who are starting to feel the hot seat and which ones are in good shape. We just did coaches 10-18.
What does that look light two-thirds of the way into the season?
We go from the coldest to the hottest.
0 – Ice Cold
1 – Still cool
2 – There’s smoke
3 – Getting Warm
4 – On Fire
5 – Start working on the resume
Jai Lucas, Miami = 0
It’s hard to put any first year coach and hot seat in the same sentence, and Jai Lucas has been outstanding in his first year at Miami, going 15-2 (4-0) so far. Jai Lucas and Miami have their sights on the NCAA Tournament.
Ryan Odom, Virginia = 0
The Ryan Odom hire from VCU has been a homerun so far. Virginia is ranked in the top 20 with a 15-3 (4-1) record, and they might just be the 2nd best team in the ACC.
Andy Enfield, SMU = 0
In his second year at SMU, Enfield has got himself a team that should reach the NCAAs. Enfield appears to have one of the ACC’s better teams.
Kyle Smith, Stanford = 0
Kyle Smith got Stanford to the NIT last year, and this year with Stanford at 13-4 (2-2) with 3 Q1 wins, he could get Stanford to the NCAA Tournament.
Will Wade, NC State = 0
Will Wade was the high-profile hire ACC last hire. NC State has been a little uneven early in the season, but there’s nothing to indicate he wasn’t the right man for the job at this point. Just be careful what you ask in interview.
Jon Scheyer, Duke = 0.25
The hotseat will never go to zero for Jon Scheyer until he wins a national title, but he’s got the best program in the ACC, and one of the very best in the country at Duke.
Luke Loucks, Florida State = .25
Florida State is 7-9 (0-3). That’s not a great start to the Louck’s tenure at Florida State, but it’s only year 1 so everything is fine for now.
Pat Kelsey, Louisville = .25
Pat Kelsey is in his second season at Louisville, following the disastrous Kenny Payne era has Louisville in the top 25, and they flew past arch rival Kentucky as a program. Now, if they miss NCAAs somehow, we could have some Louisville fans grumbling.
Brad Brownell, Clemson = 1.25
Brad Brownell made 1 NCAA tournament in his first seven years. That was a long time ago. Brownell is primed to have Clemson make their 3rd straight trip to the Big Dance. He’s adjusted to the NIL Transfer era as good as any veteran ACC coach.
