5-0 Georgia Tech has plenty to work on after surviving game effort by Wake Forest.

If you read the blog at all, you know I’m a Georgia Tech fan. That doesn’t mean wrong calls are suddenly right. Georgia Tech was offsides on 4th and 5, and a flag should have been thrown that would have probably ended the game with Wake Forest winning 23-20.

Georgia Tech caught a break. That said, when you get a break like that, what do you do with it?

The Jackets got the ball back with under 2 minutes left, and Haynes King drove them into FG range, when clutch kicker Aiden Birr nailed the game-tying FG. In OT, Georgia Tech scored a TD and XP to go up 30-23. Then the defense held on against a 2-pt conversion from Wake Forest that would have won the game for the Demon Deacons. Good teams take advantage of breaks.

That’s what Georgia Tech did to move to 5-0 and get a much-needed BYE week break, because this team has a lot to work on.

Wake Forest punched Georgia Tech in the mouth in the 1st  half and early in the 2nd half to go up 20-3. They were better prepared and better coached. They played harder and better. Georgia Tech made a spirited comeback behind Haynes King to get it to 20-20, but the Deacs forced a fumble with about 6 minutes left, and ended up taking the lead 23-20.

You know how the game ended.

DC Blake Gideon has to figure out a way to get his defense to play better against the run. They gave up another 205 to Wake Forest today. While the defense stiffens in the red zone and hasn’t allowed another team to score more than 24 points, you’re putting a ton of pressure on an offense that you have to feel like can’t have an off day for Georgia Tech. They did today for just over 2 quarters, and it nearly cost them the game.

It is a sign of growth, down 17 on the road. Georgia Tech loses this game 20/20 times over the last few years.

The Jackets found a way to leave Wake Forest with a win.

Brent Key will let them enjoy this game, but there’s a lot of work to be done, and a number of players to try and get healthy. There are plenty of examples of special seasons that never would have happened without that fortunate win or two.

Georgia Tech got theirs Saturday.
