The SEC Big 10 alliance doesn’t mean much.

Friday an announcement between the SEC and Big 10 was made.

It set off a whirlwind of Power 2 comments related to realignment, NCAA breakaways, and more.

Guess what – the announcement didn’t change anything, and frankly it doesn’t mean much.

We’ve been headed towards the P2 for years, and we’re basically at it now. The Big 12 fans that touted a P3 future simply didn’t want to accept what’s coming. At least ACC fans barring something unforeseen are realistic about such things.

Will the alliance last?

Don’t bet on it. Once one conference separates financially from the other, and it’s inevitable, all bets are off.

When there are two, there is a first and a last. Do you think realignment is finished? Do you think the Big 10 isn’t coming South into SEC territory, or that the SEC isn’t going North towards the Big 10?

The only reason the alliance came to pass, was that we all can agree the NCAA is still ill-equipped to manage anything in the future.

I expect there will be some discussions of breaking away from the NCAA, and it’s probably easier to do it as a pair, make some rules, and have the rest of college athletics follow. We knew that was potentially happening anyway.

Eventually though money rules all, and this alliance will not save the dead weight of both conferences, it wouldn’t shock me if the biggest brands of the two conferences pull away and form their own grouping of big brand programs.

Today while mildly interesting, didn’t change the direction of where things were headed.

It’s only validated it’s a P2 world until it’s P1.
