Round 3 British Open: Darren Clarke leads, Americans lurking.

10 of the top 16 players at theBritish Open are Americans after round 3 are Americans. With all the talk of American slipping golf they are having a fine British Open. It is a player from North Ireland that’s leading the event in Darren Clarke at five under.

At the start of the round the entire field was with 7 shots of the field. The bad weather separated the field. Now I would say the guys with a realistic shot are the 16 players at +1 or better. Which players should we keep an on tomorrow?

For about a year nowDustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler have been the young players looked upon as the future of American golf. They aren’t disappointing. Johnson will be in the final group is at four under, and Rickie Fowler is at two under. Johnson has contended in majors before, so this won’t be new to him. Lucas Glover couldn’t make a putt but sits only 4 back.

Then there’sPhil Mickelson . Mickelson wasn’t spectacular Saturday, but he kept the leaders in site. T7 and at Even par he’ll have to shoot in the 60s, maybe 67-68 to put some pressure on the leaders. He hasn’t had a lot of success at the British Open, but he’s given himself a chance.

Alot will depend on the weather again, but if Clarke and Johnson struggle even just a little bit a number of players can win it. Clarke probably should have a 4 or 5 shot lead. He’s missed a ton of putts, and that’s why I don’t see him winning. South Carolina born Dustin Johnson has had some major tournament disappointments. Rory Mcilory before he won the U.S Open had some close calls too, and Johnson is too talented not close the deal eventually.
