If you’re shocked that Virginia beat Florida State Friday night 46-38 2 OT, then I’m pretty sure you don’t watch college football.
Virginia has arguably the best offense in the ACC and one of the best in the country. Their QB Chandler Morris was lighting up defenses, and the Hoos came into the FSU game 1 play from being 4-0.
In addition, this was a classic trap game for FSU. A massive showdown with Miami looming, already set for primetime 7:30 next Saturday, possible Gameday, and an underdog, dangerous opponent on the road.
All the pieces were in place for an upset, but having the ingredients for an upset and actually pulling it off are two different things.
Going into Friday night, I still didn’t think Virginia’s defense would hold up the entirety of the game.
Hold up? Did it ever…
Florida State’s offense had its moments, but the Hoos defense only gave up 14 second half points, and only 3 in 2 OTs. They also came up with 3 turnovers. That was more than enough for the Virginia offense that converted 7 of 13 third downs, scored 46 points, and had nearly 450 yards of offense.
Remember when Tony Elliot first came to Virginia and wanted to be a power running team. With a makeshift offensive line Virginia ran for over 200 yards. Virginia has started to become the team Tony Elliot has always envisioned.
Through the 3 lean years, Elliot found himself on the hot seat. With a 4-1 start, that’s how you get yourself off of it.
This Virginia team is now one you don’t want to face. Their offense is close to elite, and the defense is opportunistic. They are gaining confidence, and the FSU win is further proof that the Virginia program is on the rise.
Andrea Adelson sums it up well.
Cannot say enough about what this win means for Tony Elliott and Virginia, a program that has been through so much over the last three years. Tony was building for something like this, and then dealt with an unimaginable tragedy with grace and steady leadership. What a moment.
