The honeymoon is over for Syracuse’s Fran Brown after ugly loss to UNC.

Last year, Syracuse stunned the ACC and College Football world by going 10-3 and having a top 25 season. It was truly one of the most surprising results of 2024.

2025 was expected to be a far tougher season, but early in the year, there were signs of hope.

They were 3-1 after dominating Clemson at Clemson 34-21. In that game, though, they lost their starting QB Steve Angeli, for the season. Most fans and media felt like the rest of the year would be tough for Syracuse, but I don’t think anyone expected what has transpired.

Syracuse hasn’t won a game since, and after getting routed at home 27-10 to a UNC team that hadn’t won a P4 game all season, eyes have to move squarely on to Syracuse Head Coach Fran Brown. What was the change in QB from Rickie Collins to Joseph Filardi trying to accomplish? Collins was inconsistent, but he could make plays. Filardi was a lacrosse-playing football walk-on. It seems like Brown said, ‘Let’s call it a year and go home.’

Certainly, Brown’s job status after last season is secure through this year, but this has been a poor coaching job, plain and simple. Syracuse has looked overmatched in every one of their games since the Clemson win.

Steven Angeli is a fine player, but that shouldn’t have destroyed the season in the way that it has.

For Fran Brown, the shine has worn off 2024. The honeymoon is over, as Syracuse fans already have to look to next season.

It’s fair to wonder which coach is Fran Brown, the one in 2025 or the one in 2024?
