Wake Forest moved to 5-2 (2-2) after a heartstopping 13-12 win over SMU. If you haven’t done so already, it’s time to admit the Deacs are a pretty solid team, which was even tied in the 4th quarter of both of their losses.
Jake Dickert may not be the frontrunner for ACC COY, but he better be in the discussion. Wake Forest was pre-season picked 16th in the ACC. Following a 30-29 OT loss to Georgia Tech, the Deacs season could have derailed. Not only did it not derail Wake Forest, it actually galvanized them.
Since that loss, they have won 3 games in a row. Two of those were on the road, and then when they got back home, they faced an SMU team that had never lost an ACC regular-season game in nearly two years of being in the ACC.
Saturday showed more of that resiliency we’ve seen since that Georgia Tech loss.
Forced to go with backup QB Deshawn Purdie Saturday, and overcome a whopping 5 turnovers, Wake Forest just found a way to win. Following a Wake Forest turnover inside the SMU 5-yard line, their defense stopped SMU with under 15 seconds left in the game. That’s all Wake Forest needed to run a couple of plays and get into FG range, where Kicker Connor Calvert made a 50 yard FG to give Wake Forest the win.
For Wake Forest, a bowl game is in sight. They need just 1 more win, and their schedule finishes at FSU, at Virginia, UNC, Delaware, and at Duke. They will get that 6th win, and the real question is how many more will they get? 7? 8? maybe more?
I’m not counting Wake Forest out of any of their remaining games.
What a job Jake Dickert has done with this team.
