North Carolina Tar Heels get huge opening win in Omaha over Ole Miss.

I said this on Tuesday in a preview article about the CWS.Β

If North Carolina can beat Ole Miss in their opening game, I give them a great shot to appear in the College World Series championship. Anyone in the CWS is dangerous, but this looks like a UNC/Ole Miss bracket.

I still believe it on Friday night, and I really believe it. The Tar Heels trailed Ole Miss 1-0 and then 2-1. Ole Miss never scored again, as the Heels beat Ole Miss 6-2. UNC’s bats came alive late in the game to go along with their elite pitching, and if those bats can consistently start producing, the Tar Heels are the most complete team in Omaha.

The Heels, along with West Virginia, are the only teams at the CWS with ERAs in the top 10 nationally, but I trust the Heels staff more. Why? For all of Georgia Tech’s regional failures, that was the greatest offensive baseball team of the modern era, and UNC held them to 5 runs or less in 3 of the 4 games they played. What Georgia Tech wouldn’t have done to have the arms UNC does. West Virginia gave upΒ  5 runs on Friday to Troy. UNC has given up 5 runs in its last 3 games.

The Heels proved it again tonight that they have a pitching staff that is capable of taking UNC a long long way in Omaha.
