UNC is one of the premier coaching jobs in all of college, just went to Michael Malone. No, not Billy Donovan, Tommy Lloyd or Dusty May, but Michael Malone. It was met with collective blank stare and confused looks.
Look, UNC may go on to win multiple NCAA championships with Malone, but this hire came out of nowhere.
Malone doesn’t come without some huge career milestones. He won over 500 games as an NBA coach and won an NBA title in 2023 with the Denver Nuggets. He hasn’t coached at any level of collegiate basketball in over 20 years, though.
What do we make of this hire?
You don’t coach at the level Malone for that many years without knowing the game of basketball. That is for sure, but just knowing the game isn’t always enough. Bill Belichick knows football, and that didn’t translate at least in year 1 for UNC Football.
I just don’t know about this one. We will just have to see if this works out for UNC.
