Jon Scheyer’s coaching just keeps getting better as Duke wins another ACC Title.

Duke defeated a very good Virginia team 74-70 to win another ACC Title under Jon Scheyer. This time, the Blue Devils did it without 2 starters available and will enter the NCAA tournament as the number 1 overall seed.

At this point, you have to start calling Jon Scheyer one of the best coaches in the country. Sure, Duke is talented, with a tremendous history, but coaching a Blue Blood doesn’t automatically make you a national title contendor. Ask Mark Pope at Kentucky if it is that easy.

Scheyer, replacing the legendary Mike Krzyzewksi added to the pressure. Scheyer now has 3 ACC Titles, an Elite 8, and a Final 4 with an insane 121-24 record. The questions around Scheyer will always be there until he wins a national title. That’s the way it is, but those questions surrounded coaches like Dean Smith, Coach K, and Tony Bennett too, and Scheyer is clearly getting better.

Earlier in the year, I still asked about Duke in late game situations.  Since then, Duke has gone 3-0 in games decided by 5 points or less, and that includes wins over top 15 teams Michigan and Virginia.

You can’t look at Duke late in a close game against a quality opponent and think what is Scheyer going to do? He’s clearly starting to figure it out, and his team looks confident in what he’s setting up.

That doesn’t mean Duke will certainly win a national title this year, but it’s going to happen eventually because Jon Scheyer is continually finding ways to become a better coach.
