Best and Worst case record for Wake Forest football in 2023

Louisville | Virginia | Miami | Duke | Georgia Tech | Boston College | Pittsburgh | Florida State | Virginia Tech | NC State |  Clemson | Syracuse | North Carolina

ACC 2023 Football Schedule

Wake Forest

Under Dave Clawson, Wake Forest has had 1 losing season since 2016, and still made a bowl game in a 4-5 2020 season. There have 5 bowl wins, and 4 8+ win seasons since then too. I think you can easily argue Wake Forest has been one of the 5 best ACC football programs during that time as well. Wake Forest has an established solid football foundation, and if you are still doubting them then you simply aren’t paying attention. If you pass Wake Forest in the ACC football hierarchy, you’re going to be earning it.

Will Go 9-3 (6-2) if:

Wake Forest can get off to a 4-0 start. Elon, Vanderbilt, Old Dominion, and Georgia Tech is a manageable schedule, but enough to show where the Deacs are at as the schedule ramps. QB Sam Hartman is at Notre Dame, and now Mitch Griffis takes over. If Griffis can show for a whole season the potential there were flashes of last season when he got in, but the offense could still be an absolute headache. Games at Clemson and Notre Dame are probably more than Wake Forest can manage, but the rest of the schedule is something the Deacs can work with. That includes Florida State who the Deacs beat last year. The defense needs to create more than 16 turnovers.

Will Go 5-7 (2-6) if:

The Deacs can’t replace offensive stars QB Sam Hartman and WR A.T. Perry. Wake Forest even in their better years won’t be typically great defensively. If the offense is average, Wake Forest is in trouble. After October the schedule really ramps up. The Deacs play 7 of 8 teams that went to a bowl game last year, and the other game is at Virginia Tech. They even might get bit in one or two of their openers against Elon, Old Dominion, or Georgia Tech. They return less than half their starters on both sides of the ball. Dave Clawson always seems to make Wake Forest competitive, but this is a lot of players to replace.
