Best and Worst case record for Virginia Tech football in 2023

Best / Worst Case Record for :

Louisville | Virginia | Miami | Duke | Georgia Tech | Boston College | Pittsburgh | Florida State | NC State | Clemson |  Syracuse | North Carolina | Wake Forest

ACC 2023 Football Schedule

Virginia Tech

The Virginia Tech program really has fallen on hard times. The senior class in Blacksburg has never known a winning season. Last year the bottom fell out with a 3-8 (1-6) season. At one point they lost 7 games in a row. The talent drain at Virginia Tech is very real, but if there’s a bright side the Hokies lost 4 games by by 6 points or less. We know this program’s ceiling is one of the highest in the ACC, and under second-year head coach Brent Pry significant improvement may not be that far off.

Will Go 8-4 (4-4) if:

The offense can get on some solid footing. Last year Virginia Tech was dreadful on offense ranking 120th in the nation. That means just 11 teams in FBS college football were worse on offense than the Hokies. The Hokies offense appears to have upgraded through the transfer portal, and even an offensive improvement into the top 80 could raise Virginia Tech’s win total 3 or 4 games. Virginia Tech has an opportunity for a fast start. They get Old Dominion and Purdue at home, then winnable games at Rutgers and at Marshall. If they get to 4-0, and pull an upset of Pittsburgh – that’s a 5-0 start. The schedule is tougher in the second half of the season, but the Hokies can get to 8 wins with a 4-1 or 5-0 start. The secondary is top-notch.

Will Go 4-8 (2-6) if:

The lines of scrimmage struggle similar to last season. Virginia Tech was neither particularly good upfront on either side of the ball, especially on offense and that could sink 2023. Last year, the Hokies didn’t have one game where they scored more than 30 points. The defense has a quality secondary, but there are questions in the trenches too. The Hokies could easily start the season 0-3. Old Dominion has been a thorn for the Hokies and games with Purdue and Rutgers are dangerous. I don’t see Virginia Tech recovering from a 1-4 type start. Virginia Tech’s season will be defined by those first five games.
