Navy-Notre Dame V-12 history mixed with my family history

Navy-Notre Dame is a time-honored college football tradition with continuity strengthened through American history. The specific epochal period was World War II. It’s the reason the rivalry, renewed for the 92nd time Saturday night in San Diego, remains the nation’s longest uninterrupted intersectional series. It dates to 1927, despite playing out as one-sided affairs many …

Ranking the Power 5 Football Conferences after Week 8

While the playoff committee doesn’t rank the power 5 conference, there is no way conference strength – which means OOC results doesn’t figure in to a committee members thought process. Let me point out on my philosophy on these rankings – your most recent  OOC results count a lot, and you’ll see me reference that …

ACC QUESTION of the Week : Which ACC hot-seat coaches most badly need a strong second half of the season? Let’s start with this note at the forefront of our conversation: If you asked me right now, I do not think an ACC head coach will be fired in 2018. One might step away due …

Blowout to Clemson won’t define NC State’s season.

I was at the Clemson NC State game today, and Clemson hammered NC State. Any illusion that NC State was ready to beat the ACC’s top dog today was wiped out in an onslaught of Clemson’s superior talent and depth. The Wolfpack were no match for the Tigers in a 41-7 blowout. Blog Contributor James …

Time to really take notice of Virginia football after win over Duke.

There’s something going on at Virginia, that’s caught a lot us of by surprise. Virginia Cavalier football is legitimately pretty good. After a 28-14 win at Duke, you need to start paying attention to what Bronco Mendenhall is doing. Last week Virginia upset Miami. It was a big win for the Hoos, but upsets happen. …

To Grow In the Fuente Era, Virginia Tech Football Must Defeat Georgia Tech

Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) football fans. Hope you are enjoying some great ACC football today. In 2016, Virginia Tech ended it’s curse on the road at Pittsburgh – and the Hokies had not won at Pittsburgh since 1999 – I mentioned that Virginia Tech, in order to grow as a program, had to …

Florida State Opponent Preview: Wake Forest

Wake Forest I have to admit: I was pleasantly surprised to see the score of FSU versus Miami from my seat in Gainesville (don’t ask why I attended the LSU vs UF game). Alas, FSU could not hold-on quite as long as they needed (and had a controversial dismissed touchdown that would of sealed the …

Joe Giles-Harris and Ben Humphreys combine as Duke’s 1-2 punch

If it seemed like Joe Giles-Harris and Ben Humphreys were joined at the hip throughout last week’s win at Georgia Tech, look no further the defensive statistics. Together, Duke’s inside linebackers combined for 26 tackles. Giles-Harris, a 6-foot-2, 240-pounder, led the Blue Devils with five solo tackles and 15 assisted for a 15 total. Humphreys, …

James Nachtigal took a familiar path to West Point commitment

James Nachtigal explained how he surprised himself ending up at West Point. It’s unique to him, but Army players have told similar tales throughout Tucker Waugh 17 seasons pounding the recruiting trail as a Black Knights assistant coach. “Coach Waugh showed up at my school one day,” said Nachtigal, Army’s leading tackler as a senior …

Mid-Season grades for each ACC football team.

NC State : A+ I would have liked to see the Wolfpack play West Virginia, but NC State has done everything that’s been asked of them to this point at 5-0. They play Saturday against Clemson for a chance to make a national splash. QB Ryan Finley is playing at an extremely high level. Dave …
