My Vote For The 2017-2018 #ACC Anthony J. McKevlin and Mary Garber Awards

 

Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.

Today I voted for the Anthony J. McKevlin (best ACC male athlete) and Mary Garber (best ACC female athlete) Awards.

Specifically for the McKevlin award, I voted for NC State defensive end, Bradley Chubb.  Here’s the run down on Chubb:

  • The No. 5 pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, he was selected by the Denver Broncos.
  • Won the 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given to the nation’s top defender.
  • The 2017 Ted Hendricks Award recipient, given to the nation’s top defensive end.
  • A consensus first-team All-American, he won honors from: Walter Camp, the Football Writers Association of American (FWAA), the Associated Press, The Sporting News and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA).
  • 2017 ACC Defensive Player of the Year – the first for the Wolfpack since 2000.
  • First-team All-ACC performer – he was the top vote-getter on defense.
  • A finalist for the Bednarik Award.
  • Set the NC State career records for tackles for loss and sacks in the win at Boston College, he finished with 60 TFL and 26 sacks for his career. Broke the records previously held by Mario Williams, the No. 1 pick in the 2006 NFL draft.
  • His TFL mark is tied for 4th in ACC history with William “The Refrigerator” Perry from Clemson, while his 26 sacks are t18th.
  • Finished the season as the Power 5 leader in sacks and tackles for loss.
  • Three time ACC Defensive Lineman of the Week: vs. Florida State, Syracuse and Boston College.
  • Played 87% of the defensive snaps vs. ACC competition as a senior (502 of 574).
  • Named a midseason All-American by AP, ESPN, CBS, Fox Sports, Sports Illustrated, Sporting News, USA Today and The Athletic. Mark Schlabaugh of ESPN named him the Midseason national defensive player of the year and he was a unanimous choice of SI and CBS.
  • Athlon’s Defensive Player of the Week vs. FSU.
  • 26 TFLs in 2017 was the second-best single-season mark in school history behind WIlliams.
  • 10 sacks in 2017 tied for sixth in school history.
  • Tied for third in school history with eight career fumbles forced.

For the Garber Award, I voted for prolific lacrosse goal scorer, attacker Sam Apuzzo.

  • A two-time Tewaaraton Award Top 25 List member (2017, 2018)
  • IWLCA First Team All-American

  • All-ACC Attacker of the Year
  • All-ACC First Team selection
  • Led BC’s lacrosse teams to the NCAA Final Four, including lacrosse’s second trip to the National Championship game
  • All-NCAA Tournament Team
  • All-ACC Tournament Team
  • Preseason All-ACC team
  • Helped lead BC to a perfect regular season (17-0) and the 2018 ACC Regular Season Championship
  • A two-time IWLCA All-Northeast Region First Team honoree
  • A two-time Tewaaraton Award Watch List member (2016, 2017)
  • Posted a career-best in points (129), goals (88) and assists (41)
  • Broke the program’s single season goal scoring record with the 88 goals – she set the record last year with 81
  • Broke the program’s single season points scored record (129), which she set last year with 119 points
  • Broke the program’s single season draw control record (163) & the single game record when she had 17 in the ACC Tournament vs. Louisville
  • Tied the single season record for most assists with 41 helpers
  • Led the ACC in points (129), goals (88), GWG (9), second in total DCs (163) and 4th in assists (41).
  • Scored three or more goals in 19 games
  • Set a new program record with nine goals vs. Navy on Feb. 27
  • Notched double-figures in DCs in five games – had five or more DCs in 16 games
  • Had nine goals, eight assists, 17 points, and 36 DCs in four NCAA Tournament games
  • Third in the nation in points, third in goals scored, sixth in points per game (5.38), 10th in draw controls per game (6.79), 2nd in total draw controls and 19th in assists
  • Second on the Eagles All-Time List for career points with 273, passing Lauren Miller ’02 who posted 272
  • Second on the Eagles All-Time List for goals scored with 189, just eight away from breaking Covie Stanwick’s ’15 record of 196 career goals
  • Third on the All-Time List for career assists with 84
  • Owns the new career draw control record at BC with 267
  • A three-time Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Achievement honoree
  • Two-time ACC Honor Roll honoree
