Good evening and Happy Friday, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
Lots of good ACC men’s basketball ahead for Saturday and Sunday.
Jeffrey Fann (@TalkinACCSports) drops a status on the Hokies right here – as of yesterday, he has Virginia Tech in the NCAA tournament as a 10 seed.
So, let’s catch up with Virginia Tech as I have written about the Hokies a couple of times in the last month. On both occasions, I questioned whether the Hokies were an NIT team. After the loss to Florida State, the Hokies powered on to 5 of 6 games, including wins over North Carolina (the defending national champion) and on the road at Boston College (which Duke failed to do). But then Virginia Tech got one of the most unexpected wins in the entire country (and maybe best national wins all year) vs. #2 Virginia in Charlottesville, VA (who became #1 on the following Monday). @TalkinACCSports wrote about the Hokies big win over the Hoos here. The Hokies then lost at Duke – but I’d take a split on the road at Virginia and Duke any of the the week.
Going forward, here’s the way I see it:
Virginia Tech must win at Georgia Tech tomorrow. A loss would be disastrous for the #Hokies postseason hopes.

The schedule not easy for the #Hokies – at Georgia Tech, home vs. Clemson, Louisville, and Duke – and on the road at Miami. That said, 100 times out of 100 I take a split on the road at Duke and UVA (this past week). But VT must win at Georgia Tech. Sense of urgency needed.

So, there’s really no debating this – Virginia Tech (18-8/7-6) MUST win at Georgia Tech tomorrow. The Yellow Jackets have a 157 RPI – this is a team that is without its 2nd best player. The Hokies cannot – I repeat – cannot lose in Atlanta. It would be a disaster for the Hokies postseason hopes (much of the goodwill the Hokies earned by winning at Virginia would be lost). Virginia Tech must win at least two more games (and maybe one at the ACC tournament) to make the NCAA tournament. The good news is that Justin Robinson, the Hokies 6’2″ point guard, is playing so well right now, he might find himself with ACC third team honors (and he will tomorrow, too). At 147 assists, he’s putting his teammates in the position to score – and he’s dropping some points himself – he’s the consummate floor general.
It all begins tomorrow – rarely do I become fanboy here – Go Hokies!!
