ACC QUESTION of WEEK : Should Florida State get a 1 seed if it wins the ACC Tournament?

Kansas will be the No. 1 seed in the Midwest Region on Selection Sunday, which is one week away. Baylor will be the 1 seed in the South. Gonzaga will be the No. 1 seed in the West. This leaves the East, where the Dayton Flyers are probably the biggest obstacle for the Florida State Seminoles in the battle for the fourth and final No. 1 seed.

Let’s say Dayton wins the Atlantic 10 Tournament championship. If Florida State wins the ACC Tournament, should the Seminoles climb over the Flyers for a top seed? Let’s put it this way: FSU would have a great case to make.

Dayton’s resume is built on the strength of two facts: 1) It has lost only two games. 2) Those two losses are to a No. 1 seed, Kansas, and another NCAA Tournament team, Colorado. There are no bad losses, and very few losses, period. That’s Dayton’s resume. The Flyers’ best win, though? Saint Mary’s, which will be somewhere between an 8 to 10 seed.

Florida State has lost to Pittsburgh and Clemson and Indiana, but the Seminoles swept Louisville, beat Florida and Virginia. Florida and Saint Mary’s are roughly equal wins. Dayton doesn’t have anything resembling a sweep of Louisville plus a win over Virginia. FSU has three wins far better than anything Dayton has accomplished.

If FSU then wins the ACC Tournament, it will LIKELY mean the Seminoles beat Duke — whom they are bracketed to play in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Friday — and either Louisville or Virginia, which are in the other half of the ACC bracket.

Even if Duke gets upset and Florida State plays North Carolina State in the semifinals, the Noles would still probably play Louisville or UVA in the ACC Tournament championship game. Winning that game would boost FSU’s resume more than any game Dayton will play in the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Yep, if FSU wins the ACC Tournament, it should get the top seed in the East.
