Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
Very quick post here:
In 2018, Virginia Tech softball clocked in at 23 wins and 20 losses. The Hokies last NCAA tournament bid was in 2015.
We fast forward to 2019 – and you see the Hokies at 45-8 (!!!!). This might be the best college sports team turnaround (regardless of the sport) in 2019 – and if Virginia Tech head softball coach, Pete D’Amour, is not national softball coach of the year (or at the very least, on the short list), I’ll be shocked.
All these national stats below are from the NCAA stats site on games played through May 2, 2019:
- Offensively, the Hokies are 7th in batting average, 3rd in home runs, 8th in scoring, 5th in slugging percentage, and 10th in doubles. This is a very good hitting team.
- Defensively, the Hokies are a respectable 17th on earned run average and 27th on the strike out to walk ratio.
Short answer here is that the Hokies get their wins through offense.
This is maybe the best turnaround of any college sports team this year – regardless of the sport.
Congratulations to the Virginia Tech softball team for being the #1 seed in the ACC softball tournament.
It’s official!
