Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
Seems that the Virginia Tech Hokies Men’s Basketball team are your regular Jekyll and Hyde – out here crushing Virginia by over 30 points (and none of us saw this blowout coming) – but getting absolutely wrecked on the road at Pittsburgh and at Syracuse.
Today, however, the Hokies achieved their largest comeback history since 2018 with an 87-76 win over Wake Forest. Wake Forest shot 64% from three-point land (and dropped to 18% in the 2nd half). Even better – Hunter Sallis – a sure fire all-ACC first team player – only had 11 points.
If the Hokies could have even a below average record on the road, this would be an NCAA tournament team – the loss on the road to Notre Dame is one that I will also remember – it might have derailed the Hokies NCAA tournament hopes (until that loss, the Hokies had avoided any bad loss).
Here’s the deal: I actually think Virginia Tech will close the season now at 18-13 – the rest of the schedule includes road game at Louisville – and a home game vs. Notre Dame (both are tricky games, but I think the Hokies will win both of them). That would put Virginia Tech in the 12 PM EST Wednesday game of the ACC men’s basketball tournament in Washington, DC – where there’s a lot of Virginia Tech alumni – the likely opponent, then, is Florida State – one win in the ACC tournament should put the Hokies in the National Invitational Tournament (I wouldn’t expect more than one win for the Hokies in the ACC tournament.
That’s kind of the story of Virginia Tech’s season – can’t really ever turn the corner, as @TalkinACCSports said.
The Hokies must find better basketball talent. That’s so important.
