Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
Virginia Tech football is an an interesting position – it has a first-time Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) head coach, a first-time FBS offensive coordinator, and a first-time FBS defensive coordinator. As an athletic director, this is Whit Babcock’s second football coaching hire. This is the last opportunity Babcock will have to hire a football coach – you only get two chances at that. Babcock has had good success with the other sports at Virginia Tech – but football is important in the Hokie lore.
We fast forward to tonight – to watch a Virginia Tech football team who maybe has one of the top five worst FBS offensive lines – I do not exaggerate. The Hokies had 11 yards rushing on offense tonight – and gave up 179 yards of rushing on defense. This is dreadful. But what was more dreadful was the continual, repeated attempts at interior running – that never worked. If you’re running game is deficient, you have to take some attempts at short passes.

You have to do that – he could be your rushing game on many nights – he could more effectively run the pitch play to RBs

Yes, it was fun to see Kryon Drones come in for the Hokies at quarterback – and I support making that change now – he will be your rushing game – the Hokies need an athlete on the field now (he could be a huge part of that rushing attack). Because you are not going to win a game with 11 yards rushing – when your team cannot stop the opposing rushing attack – and you lose the turnover battle.
The Hokies are in bad shape with talent in the trenches – that’s where everything starts – the offensive and defensive lines are at the bottom of the ACC and the FBS from a talent perspective. Andrea Adelson maybe nailed it. Maybe this story was a “we told you it was going to be bad.”
Whit Babcock is going to be feeling some heat if things don’t improve in Year 3. I personally did not have Virginia Tech in a bowl game this year – but there might be substantial improvement in the 2024 season. By the way, I do believe it will get better – Pry has been recruiting his ass off – and there will be better players in Blacksburg.
