Mandatory Credit: Bob Donnan-USA TODAY Sports

The Wolfpack enter the 2023 campaign with a new man under center in Brennan Armstrong after he transferred in from Virginia after the Wolfpack lost their starting quarterback Devin Leary to Kentucky.

With Armstrong behind center for the Wolfpack, it could mean one of two things; NC State is going to win a lot of games, or there will be a lot of inconsistencies with the Armstrong-lead team. Armstrong is perfectly capable of lighting up a defense. We saw that plenty two years ago at Virginia.

NC State 2023 season prediction:

UConn – W

Notre Dame – L

VMI – W

Virginia – W (Armstrong has a career day against his former team)

Louisville – L

Marshall – W

Duke – L

Clemson – L

Miami – L

Wake Forest – W

Virginia Tech – W

North Carolina – W

I gave NC State the win over UNC primarily due to the fact that it is a home game. The week of Duke to Miami could also be a tough, yet winnable stretch for the Wolfpack as well. Although I got them losing all three do not be surprised to see them slip in a win or two in that stretch. My prediction is the Wolfpack go (7-5, 4-4).

Make sure you follow the All Sports Discussion Twitter account at @AllSportsDACC and please like our Facebook Page.

 <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1227879969298088" data-ad-slot="1445137322"></ins>
<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1227879969298088" data-ad-slot="4619304738"></ins>

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">37076</post-id>

The moment of truth arrives for NC State and Dave Doeren

Matt Zemek

ACC

ACC Football

Clemson Football

Clemson Tigers

NC State Wolfpack

North Carolina State Football

Author @MattZemek, Editor at @TrojansWire . The primetime treatment. The national centerpiece game. Unbeaten Clemson is standing in the way. On the road. Wake Forest has lost. Miami and the rest of the ACC Coastal are a mess.

If North Carolina State wins this game, what will happen? We don’t know how the results will actually unfold throughout October and November, but we do know that everything will become possible for this program.

If North Carolina State can go into Death Valley, at night, and tame the Tigers, the Wolfpack will be favored to win the ACC championship for the first time since 1979. State will be favored to make a New Year’s Six bowl for the first time ever. North Carolina State will be expected to win double-digit regular-season games, very possibly 11. State would be ranked in the top six, if not the top five. You name it, State will have a great chance to get it … IF it can beat Clemson.

We remember Kyle Bambard failing to make that short field goal several years ago in Death Valley. The Pack could have upset Clemson in 2016, knocking Deshaun Watson out of the College Football Playoff. Imagine how different the next six years would have been both in Raleigh and in the Palmetto State. That game has haunted State fans. Even though the Pack beat Clemson last year, that win didn’t become an iconic memory which wiped away the bitter taste of 2016, because State didn’t back it up with an ACC Atlantic Division title or a New Year’s Six bowl.

North Carolina State isn’t expected to win this game, but it certainly has a chance. The Wolfpack have a defense which is far better and more physical than Wake Forest’s defense, which was toothless against Clemson’s improved offensive line. The focus will naturally gravitate to quarterback Devin Leary and the State offense. To be sure, that group must be able to handle the cauldron of pressure attached to this road game on Saturday night. State has to execute on offense at a level far higher than what it showed in Greenville against East Carolina in Week 1. That is certainly a part of the puzzle for the Pack. Yet, the straightest path to victory for Dave Doeren does not go through his offense; it’s through his defense. This is the game for the N.C. State linebackers and front seven to make D.J. Uiagalelei’s life miserable. This is the moment for a heralded defense to make a statement against a Clemson offense which certainly appears to have improved from 2021, but which also faced a Wake Forest team it manhandled last year. State is unlikely to win 38-31. It is much more likely to win 20-13. The Doeren defense has to be the difference in this moment of truth for a football program.

Yes, State could lose this game and still go 11-1 and reach a lot of its goals, but if this team falls achingly, agonizingly short of its dreams against Clemson, history tells us another loss — marked by a slight loss of confidence and a slight flinch under pressure — is probably just around the corner.

This is the big chance for North Carolina State football to drive a dagger through all its accumulated demons over several decades of comparative frustration and college football futility. Few programs have played more football with more empty seasons — no New Year’s Six bowls, minimal conference titles, minimal top-shelf achievements — than N.C. State.

Here is a chance to put all of that to an end, like the 2016 Chicago Cubs or the 1994 New York Rangers or the 2017 Philadelphia Eagles.

This is the moment, North Carolina State. Just exactly how will you respond to it? The nation will be watching.

Make sure you follow the All Sports Discussion Twitter account at @AllSportsDACC and please like our Facebook Page

 <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1227879969298088" data-ad-slot="1445137322"></ins>
<ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display:inline-block;width:468px;height:60px" data-ad-client="ca-pub-1227879969298088" data-ad-slot="4619304738"></ins>

<post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">35654</post-id>

Week 10 CFP Eliminator: Contenders Far Ahead of the Field

Yesh Ginsburg

ACC

College Football

Auburn Tigers

Big Ten

CFP Eliminator

CFP Implications

CFP selection committee

Cincinnati Bearcats

College Football Playoff

NC State Wolfpack

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Ohio State Buckeyes

Oregon Ducks

Pac 12

Wake Forest Demon Deacons

This week saw a ton of upsets. Eight of the CFP selection committee’s Top 25 teams lost this week, including two of the Top 10. Of the 17 teams we had yet to eliminate last week, four lost. And none of those four teams are the sole elimination this week.

I touched on this a bit in the article last week, but the fact is that the remaining teams just have a huge lead on the field. Only 15 P5 teams have fewer than three losses. Of those 15, some of them are eliminated due to bad losses, weak schedules, or a combination of the two. (Looking at you, Pitt. Maybe a loss to Western Michigan is survivable. But you can’t lose a second along with it.)

What that means, though, is that the teams at the top are so far ahead that they can survive a loss–perhaps two. Georgia would likely be able to get in even if the Bulldogs lose two games. The SEC is possibly looking at getting two teams in–though if Georgia wins the SEC Championship Game that becomes far less likely.

Cincinnati fans might be upset at the committee’s first ranking of the Bearcats. But, really, that doesn’t matter. As teams lose, there are few other options. Another loss by Oregon and some upsets in the Big 12 or Big Ten, and Cincinnati is in the Playoff. There just aren’t other choices for the committee to fall back on.

This lack of other choices leads us to one last thing to worry about. We’re not there yet, but an upset in the Big Ten Championship Game, plus some either SEC or Big 12 chaos, and we might need to look back at our pool of eliminated teams. There are just so few teams remaining, that we may need to consider it. (Either that or conference championship game losers back their way into the Playoff–depending on how things shake out, that might be more likely). Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, though. For now, let’s keep our eyes on the situation: There are 15 teams in serious contention (plus UTSA, who I haven’t eliminated yet but who has no real chance). Some are in inside position. Others need just a bit more chaos.

One of those teams is Auburn. The Tigers have three losses, which usually automatically eliminates a team. However, given the level of chaos so far and the lack of true contenders, Auburn will be in decent position by winning out. Not only would the Tigers close the season with wins over likely #2 and #1, but they also have an impressive win over Ole Miss, and three losses that are all very respectable.

How the CFP Eliminator works

The goal is simple: We are going to count down every single FBS team that remains in contention for a College Football Playoff bid. We start with all of the FBS teams, and they get eliminated one by one until only a few remain.

If the Playoff teams are obvious, we will only have four remaining Selection Sunday morning, like 2019. If, like 2018, there is a serious bubble with multiple teams with strong claims for the fourth spot, then we might have five (or, in 2014 and 2018, six) still alive on Selection Sunday.

In addition to in this weekly article, I will also be counting down the eliminated teams on this Twitter thread. Be sure to follow the eliminations there as well as here, where I’ll be able to explain these more fully.

I also need to add two notes about the process.

1. The premise: My goal here is to not predict individual games or scenarios. With every single team, I ask myself one question only: if this team wins the rest of its games, will it make the Playoff? If the answer is no, that team is now eliminated. I don’t care how impossible it will be to win out; that’s not my job here. I will eliminate a team when that eventual loss comes. There’s no need to assume a future loss.

Now, how do I determine whether a particular resume is Playoff-worthy or not? For that, I look at 2007. 2007 was the most chaotic year we’ve had in modern college football. So I compare a resume to what the top four would look like with 2007-levels of chaos. If the resume is good enough, the team is still alive. Otherwise, it’s eliminated. As the year goes on, once I see how much chaos this season is really having, I can then adjust my standards accordingly, and start to look at individual scenarios and how outlandish they are.

Lastly, I will refer to currently-ranked teams when giving notes on a team. Keep in mind that where a team is ranked now is irrelevant. All that matters are the rankings late in the season. Being ranked now just means that a team is more likely to be ranked then, not that facing that team will definitely be meaningful.

2. Group of 5 teams: My general policy is not to eliminate any Group of 5 teams until they lose a game. Part of it is in line with the Eliminator theory––crazy things can happen in college football, and you never know how far out an undefeated team is. In reality, without hype coming in and without some marquee nonconference wins, no G5 team ever has a realistic chance. I will be more willing to eliminate teams before they lose as the season goes on, but for now the standard remains.

Week 10: Teams Remaining

We began this week with 17 teams. In Week 10, we eliminated one team. Therefore, 16 teams currently remain in College Football Playoff contention.

I include Notre Dame in the ACC in this roundup for simplicity.

ACC:

Team:

Notes:

<del>N.C. Please note that these power rankings measure where a team is right now, meaning that they can (and will) fluctuate throughout the season.

With that in mind, here’s the initial installment of the All Sports Discussion ACC Power Rankings.

14. Georgia Tech

I don’t know if I’ve seen this formation much before. pic.twitter.com/cQNVrDDWR6

— Will Ojanen (@WillsWorldMN) August 30, 2019

After watching the Yellow Jackets in action against Clemson, it’s clear that the team will struggle on offense this season. Yes, we expected Tech to have trouble versus the Tiger front seven. However, we also thought that the Jackets could score on first-and-goal from the one-yard line. To add insult to injury, Tech had to resort to trick plays in that series (see above), rather than just punching it in like it did over and over again during the Paul Johnson era.

13. Duke

It might not seem right to put the Blue Devils at 13 based on the first two series against Alabama, where they forced a three-and-out and a fumble. However, Crimson Tide QB’s connected on 30 of 36 passes for 367 yards and an Al Bundy (4 TD’s in one game). That’s not going to cut it against the signal callers in this league.

12. Virginia Tech

“I don’t care who you play — whether it’s a high school team, a junior college team, a college team, much less an NFL team. When you turn the ball over five times… you ain’t going to beat anybody I just talked about.” – Jim Mora, Sr.

Although the BC defense deserves credit for making some clutch plays, the quote above pretty much tells the story. Tech turned the ball over five times, with two of them ending promising scoring drives. Two of the other turnovers gave the Eagles the ball at the VT 17 and the VT 28. It’s hard to win games when that happens.

11. Pittsburgh

The Panthers probably deserve a better fate. All they did was lose to a solid Virginia team. The Pittsburgh defense actually tuned in a solid effort, limiting the Cavs to 310 yards and a paltry 3.9 yards per carry. However, the offense did give up four sacks and two interceptions. Unless this number improves, the Panthers will hover around the bottom of the Coastal Division.

10. Florida State

The ‘Noles jumped out to a 31-13 lead over Boise State, prompting many in the media to say that Florida State was back. Unfortunately, the Broncos shut out the Seminoles in the second half, limiting the team to just 68 yards of total offense. Dehydration or not, that number must improve in order for the ‘Noles to compete for the ACC Atlantic crown.

9. Louisville

Even though the Cardinals didn’t beat Notre Dame, they showed the entire country that they’re an improved team under Scott Satterfield. Louisville ran the ball surprisingly well against the Irish, running for 249 yards, while averaging 5.3 yards per carry. Assuming the Cards do a better job of protecting the football, there’s no reason to think that they won’t return to a bowl this season.

8. Miami

The Canes were one or two plays away from defeating Florida in week 0. Although it’s possible that this loss might not look so bad in the future, it certainly stings at the moment.

7. Wake Forest

The Demon Deacons fought off a well-coached Utah State team in the final minutes, which is just enough to put them in the top half of the rankings. Sure, this victory was far from perfect, especially given Wake’s struggles on third-and-short. Yet, the team made plays when it had to, converting on fourth down to take the take the lead and then coming up with a huge stop late in the game after a targeting penalty put the Aggies in position to tie it up.

6. North Carolina

The Tarheels pulled one of the biggest shockers of the opening weekend, upsetting South Carolina 24-20. Mack Brown allowed Sam Howell to do his thing in the second half, which produced 18 points in the final 30 minutes of the contest. The defense also rose to the occasion late in the game, picking off two passes to end any hope of a Gamecock comeback. While there’s still work to do, keep an eye on the ‘Heels in the Coastal.

5. Boston College

The Eagles turned in a solid effort in week 1, defeating Virginia Tech 35-28. Despite giving up 442 yards, the BC defense got the job done, recovering two fumbles and picking off three passes. The offense wasn’t half-bad, either, racking up 5.76 yards per play. Don’t be surprised if the Eagles are 6-0 when they host NC State in mid-October.

4. Virginia

Who was that guy that went on the All Sports Discussion podcast and said Virginia would take a step back this year? That’s right, it was me. And, I might be dead wrong. The ‘Hoos played a solid game against Pittsburgh, as the defense took over the game in the second half. In fact, the Panthers only produced two drives longer than 30 yards in the second half, with neither of them resulting in points.

3. NC State

The Wolfpack easily dismantled perennial giant-killer East Carolina. The offense proved that it will be just fine with Matthew McKay at the controls, racking up 505 of yards of total offense. The Pack D also turned in a solid effort, holding the Pirates to 269 yards.

2. Syracuse

Even though the Orange made its share of mistakes – three turnovers and a completion percentage of less than 50 percent – their performance against Liberty is just what you’d expect of a top contender in the ACC. The fact that the Twitterverse was more concerned with Hugh Freeze coaching from his hospital bed tells you all that you need to know about this contest.

1. Clemson

The Tigers looked like the best team in the country against Georgia Tech. The Clemson D is as nasty as ever, preventing the Jackets from scoring after a turnover gave them first-and-goal at the Tiger 1.
