Louisville and Scott Satterfield were toast if they lost at UCF Friday. They opened the season with a listless performance at Syracuse, then headed to a tricky road game at UCF where they were underdogs, before facing the improved Florida State Seminoles.
They were staring at an 0-3 start right in the face. Scott Satterfield’s seat was about to go from hot to on fire, and the season was in danger of going off the rails.
I still can’t say I thought Satterfield coached a great game. His decision to go for it on 4th and long late in the game set UCF up at mid-field, but the Louisville defense with a dash of QB Malik Cunningham bailed out Satterfield.
Satterfield should be taking his defensive staff and his entire defense out to dinner for a week. The Louisville defense played one of their grittiest toughest games in recent memory. They held UCF to 14 points, 339 yards of total offense, and 4 for 16 on third down.
They tackled and pursued extremely well against a team with some speed.
Now Louisville can enter the FSU game next week with a new level of confidence, and without the sense of desperation, a loss would have left them with.
It’s the kind of win that the Cardinals can build on.
