Good afternoon, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
In December 2023, my buddy, @TalkinACCSports, argued that Louisville must terminate the employment of Kenny Payne.
Jeff was right, for sure – I always thought this would be like a James Johnson sort of thing with Virginia Tech men’s basketball – where Kenny Payne gets terminated at the end of the season just like what happened with Johnson. But there’s a key difference here with Payne vs. what happened with Johnson at Virginia Tech.
Johnson never lost his team at Virginia Tech – they played hard every minute even though they were severely outmanned at every position on the court – there was no ACC roster. But they busted their ass for him – and Johnson never threw his team under the bus.
Enter Kenny Payne:

I watched this entire press conference – and I’m honestly kind of surprised (figuratively – not literally) that the video didn’t include players with bus tracks over their jerseys. YES – this was figurative and not literal statement. And Kenny Payne openly stated that he is not sure why he can’t reach the players – you’re openly admitting you can’t reach the players.
Louisville might want to appoint the assistant coach as the interim head coach prior to the ACC tournament – it’s too late to terminate Payne for the final two games of the season – but an interim head coach in the ACC tournament might provide a shot in the arm for the players. It will also give Louisville a leg up when it hires a new coach for 2024-2025 – because that must happen. This below is not what Louisville basketball is – and it’s sad for everyone to see that:
Under Kenny Payne, Louisville basketball is:
12-49 overall
5-33 vs. the ACC
1-27 in road/neutral site games
