Good evening, Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) sports fans.
On Columbus Day, I’m going to do a deep dive into Virginia Tech QBs in the Justin Fuente era. I’ll just leave you with baffling backup quarterback decision #2 in success weeks.
In that post, Richmond Times Dispatch Reporter, Mike Barber had an epic tweet:
Baffling coaching. Put your inexperienced backup QB in when the offense is backed up deep early in a game where you’re already struggling with an FCS opponent?
Richmond and #Hokies tied at 7-7 now and that decision was a head scratcher.— Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) September 25, 2021
As you can see above, Justin Fuente decided to throw in an inexperienced backup QB with the offense pinned way back on their own six hard line vs. Richmond. It was a baffling decision from Fuente – there’s no other way to say this.
This week, we bring you another epic tweet – this time from the Dean of all Virginia sports reporters, David Teel, also from the Richmond Times Dispatch:
BTW, this 29-21 lead for #Hokies is exactly the reason you DON’T chase points late in third quarter going for 2. Had Tech simply kicked PAT, the margin would be two scores.

Once again, Justin Fuente makes another odd decision about a backup QB. He decides to go for two points – after a penalty – with the backup QB chasing points. This was a Fuente decision to chase points. Kicking the PAT gets you a point – and you are leading by two scores. Why do this?
As I said, I’ll do a deeper dive on QB play in the Justin Fuente era on Monday.
But I’m on board with thinking this is who Justin Fuente is at this point after 6 years – these are the kinds of decisions he makes. This is him.
