Saturday, Georgia Tech beat the Clemson Tigers 24-21 in a riveting, physical vintage rivalry game.
Aaron Birr is becoming one of the better kickers in the country and nailed a 55-yarder to win it. The Jackets have had big wins under Brent Key against even higher-ranked teams, but this is a signature win. Those wins had the feel of plucky upsets; this one felt like a season-defining one.
The last time Georgia Tech had a 9 win season that didn’t include a win over Clemson and/or Georgia was in 2006. That’s the only time it happened since at least 1980.
Haynes King continues to add to his legend. Down 14-13 near the end of the 3rd quarter and facing one of the most talented defenses in the country, King leads Georgia Tech on a 90 yard drive to take a 21-14 lead. Then, with the score tied, King for the 2nd time in 3 games puts Georgia Tech in position to win on the final drive of the game.
It was a long a 55-yard FG, but King and the offense gave Georgia Tech kicker Aaron Birr a chance to win it. He ended up with over 300 yards of total offense, and now, at 3-0 the sky is the limit on Georgia Tech’s season.
They avoid Miami, FSU, and Louisville, and they control their own destiny to the ACCCG and the CFP Playoff. Yes Georgia Tech must play one game at a time. I still have concerns about the defense in the pass game, a game at Duke could be tricky, and road games at Boston College and NC State must have their full attention before the finale with Georgia.
Brent Key continues to rebuild Georgia Tech brick by brick. He won’t allow his team to overlook anyone and a team that was one of the P4s worst under Geoff Collins will be a top 25 team next week.
