Don’t look now but NC State is surging.

I kind of have a rule when I post articles about ACC football games. I don’t write articles about games unless I’ve watched at least half of them. I like to see the game flow, and how teams respond in certain situations.

I’m breaking that rule for NC State after their 26-6 win over Wake Forest Saturday to move to 7-3 on the season.

The Wolfpack deserves some of our attention because they are surging.

On October 14, the Wolfpack were 4-3, and my podcast co-host @ASD_Hokiesmash called them one of the most disappointing teams in the ACC.  And why not at the time? The Wolfpack were pre-season picked to win 8, 9, or even 10 games by most people. QB Brennan Armstrong transferred in and was reunited with his OC Robert Anae when they were lighting up opponents at Virginia.

It looked like a failed experiment mid-way through the season, and then the Wolfpack started winning with QB MJ Morris. They defeated Clemson and then Miami 24-17 and 20-6. It started to feel like the Wolfpack could finish with a flourish. This week though MJ Morris decided to call it quits on the season or save his redshirt depending on your point of view.

Head coach Dave Doeren had to go back to Brennan Armstrong who responded totaling over 200 yards of offense passing and rushing with no interceptions. That’s been NC State during the last 3 games. They have fought through adversity with an elite defense and a change in QB. This is a resilient team, that’s fought back from a slow start to the season.

Give me a team that plays defense, and you’ll always have a chance. NC State has that, and now can still have that 8 – 9 regular season wins many predicted.

The Wolfpack have been flying under the radar all season behind FSU and Louisville. They’ve not been ranked at any point like Clemson, Duke, Miami, or UNC, but you can’t ignore them anymore and I wouldn’t want to be facing them now either.
