The 2019 ACC Football schedule was released a few days ago, and I’ve had a chance to look it over. Let me tell you 5 things I like about the schedule. 1) ACC Conference games to open the season and launch ACC Network. We already knew Georgia Tech at Clemson would launch the ACC Network …

Jeff Capel faces his mentor after leaving Duke for Pitt

Jim Boeheim, Syracuse’s 73-year-old coach, said something that helps explain Jeff Capel coaching Pitt basketball tonight against Duke rather than seated next to Mike Krzyzewski, 71, for another year as his associate head coach. Boeheim responded to a question about retirement before the season began at the ACC media day in Charlotte. His answer seems …

ACC football in 2018 was better than you think.

Since football still drives so much when it comes to conference revenues from TV Contracts, Bowl Deals, to a lesser extent the general health of a conference let’s take stock of ACC football. Certainly it never hurts to have the best football team in the country. Clemson won their second national title in three years. …

Clemson’s destruction of Alabama has changed the face of College Football.

Sometimes a win can be so earth shattering that it can change the direction and/or perception of an entire sport. National Title teams from the SEC were deemed unbeatable after the conference had 4 different teams win 7 straight titles. That was until Florida State stopped the streak by defeating Auburn in 2013. SEC hasn’t …

Clemson isn’t just very good anymore, they are becoming a dynasty.

So many thoughts on Clemson’s absolute destruction of Alabama 44-16. I will be writing more tomorrow, but for tonight all I can think of is Clemson has now entered dynasty territory. They are up there with the great Miami teams of the 80s and early 90s, FSU and Nebraska in the 90s, USC in the …

Some overlooked thoughts on ECU Football looking back and ahead

Flipping the calendar to 2019 seems a good time to empty my East Carolina football notebook. Here is a look back at the chaotic dismissal of Scottie Montgomery followed by the ironically efficient hiring of Mike Houston four days later. Talk about turning the tables. In the aftermath of ECU’s embarrassing 58-3 loss to N.C. …

NC State hammered by Texas A&M in bowl, still looks for signature OOC win.

It’s hard to be too critical of a program that’s won 18 games the last two years. If you are Clemson or Alabama, then maybe you complain. If you are NC State that means you are mostly beating the teams you should beat. That said there is still an emptiness to the Wolfpack’s 9-4 year. …

After Bowl Loss and 7-7 season, How should Pittsburgh feel about season?

Pittsburgh won the Coastal Division and went 6-2 in the ACC. They lost 7 games including their last 3 and got blown out by Penn State, UCF, and Clemson. They blew a 4th quarter lead in the Sun Bowl to Stanford to lose 14-13. For almost every ACC team, there’s a line that said we’re happy with or not with our year. Pittsburgh more than any other ACC team it’s hard to decide exactly how they should feel about the 2018 season. …

Justin Fuente coaching blunders send Virginia Tech to a bowl loss and a losing season.

It’s been a rough season at Virginia Tech – attrition, injuries, young and inexperienced on defense. There have been historically bad home losses too, but with recent wins over Virginia and Marshall, Virginia Tech got bowl eligible. They had a chance to salvage something out of the season. After a 35-31 loss to Cincinnati, the Hokies still have their bowl streak and winning streak over Virginia intact. That’s all after their first losing season (6-7) in 25 years. If you are Hokie fan you have to be frustrated by Justin Fuente’s two …
