We are closing in on the finish to the regular season in college basketball. Who is leading the ACC COY race?

Pat Kelsey, Louisville

Pat Kelsey is the runaway leader for ACC COY. At 23-6 (16-2), Louisville is a lock for the NCAA tournament. He inherited a team that went 12-52 (5-35) under Kenny Payne the previous two seasons. We’re talking NET and RPI rankings in the 300s. Kelsey turned over the roster and there was optimism, but nothing like this could have been imagined. Despite several injuries including the loss of Kaseon Pryor, Louisville has been one of the ACC’s three best teams. The Cardinals were picked 9th in the pre-season, and exceeded every expectation, and they are still getting better. There was no mid-season collapse, the only way the award isn’t a slam-dunk is if the Cardinals lose their final 2 regular season home games to Cal and Stanford. That’s not happening.

Brad Brownell, Clemson

Clemson came into the pre-season picked 4th in the ACC, and has done nothing to disappoint. Clemson has a 24-5 (16-2) record with a win over Kentucky, and the only ACC team to beat Duke. The Tigers are two OT losses from being 26-4. Brownell has absorbed the departure of All-ACC player PJ Hall, and built this year’s team around the backcourt of Chase Hunter and Jaeden Zachary. The Tigers can come at you from so many different directions, that any player 1-8 can give you 10+ point scoring night. The award is Kelsey’s but Brownell’s fine job of coaching should be recognized.

Jon Scheyer, Duke

Duke was the favorite to win the ACC. Everybody knew the roster was talented, but we’ve seen plenty of talented rosters fail to meet expectations. At 26-3 (17-1), Scheyer has taken Duke from a top 10 team to arguably the best team in the country. Auburn is the only team I see in their class, and guess what Duke beat them. He learned from the early season error of over-relying on freshman phenom Cooper Flagg to getting contributions across the board, while still having Flagg in the national POY chase. Their defense is some of the best Duke has played in years, and Scheyer has coached around recent injuries to Maliq Brown and Tyrese Proctor. Fortunately, those aren’t season-ending injuries, and they will be back.

Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech

I feel like Georgia Tech’s Damon Stoudamire has earned a spot in this discussion even though the other 3 are your leading candidates. Stoudamire won’t win this award, but if you were giving an award since February it might be Stoudamires. We wrote about this last week. With 3 of his top 8 players still out, and at least 2 others missing some time during the month, Stoudamire’s Georgia Tech team has played NCAA tournament-caliber basketball going 6-2, with 3 Q1 wins including victories over Clemson and Louisville in back to back efforts. He won’t win ACC COY, but he’s done as good a coaching job as anyone in the ACC the last 4 weeks.

Other Candidates

SMU was pre-season picked 13th in the ACC, and SMU is 21-8 (12-6) and Andy Endfield has got the Mustangs thinking about the bubble when no one else did. Kyle Smith at Stanford has the Cardinals being a real headache in the ACC at 19-10 (11-7) after they were picked 17th in the pre-season. No, they won’t win the award, and are well back of Kelsey, Brownell, and Scheyer, but Endfield and Smith have done rock-solid jobs this year.

Look I’ve been saying it saying since November. There’s Duke and Auburn and everybody else. Sorry Alabama, Florida, and Houston. When Duke and Auburn are at the top of their game, you aren’t beating them. Duke made a game Saturday with 8/9 NCAA seed in Illinois, look like a scrimmage. Auburn treated Ole Miss an NCAA team Wednesday night like a warm up drill.

For Duke to be that team though, they need Proctor’s experienced steady play.

He’ll be back and Duke remains on the short list of teams that can win the national title.

There’s been a quiet ACC men’s basketball story developing in the month of February.

Georgia Tech entered the month 9-12 ( 3-7). The injuries were mounting and the season was going nowhere. Freshman stars Baye Ndongo and Nait George weren’t developing into the sophomores many expected. There was growing frustration by Georgia Tech fans disappointed in a season where there were pre-season NCAA tournament whispers.

Nearly a month later the Jackets went 5-2 (5-2), with wins over the ACC’s 2nd and 3rd best teams. Georgia Tech is the only team in the month of February to beat either Louisville or Clemson. They went on the road for their 3rd Q1 win of the month by winning at reeling Pittsburgh Tuesday night.

All year we’ve heard the ACC lacked Q1 opportunities and in general yes that’s true, but Georgia Tech proved they are out there.

They now stand 14-14 (8-9). It’s a testament to how Damon Stoudamire has held his team together. He’s had at least 5 of his top 8 contributors miss time during the month. Kowacie Reeves and Luke O’Brien haven’t played at all.

Nobody would have noticed if Georgia Tech had just played out the string of the season, but a funny thing happened. Georgia Tech became the team Pitt, Wake Forest, and SMU wanted to be. A team that could steal those Q1 victories, at home or away. A team that has improved as the season progressed, and a team despite injuries found a way to win.

Louisville’s Pat Kelsey is going to be the ACC COY. Jon Scheyer and Duke are the conference’s best team, and Brad Brownell has Clemson surging, but we shouldn’t overlook the month Stoudamire has coaxed out of team.

Georgia Tech’s depth issues still at times bite them, but make no mistake Stoudamire has them believing they still have plenty to play for.

18. Miami (6-21, 2-14) NET – 217, RPI – 287

Last Week: 18

Miami’s nightmare season continues. They get Duke at home then go to UNC this week. Just end the season already.

17. California (12-15, 5-11) NET – 123, RPI – 188

Last Week: 15

Cal has lost 4 games in a row, and 5 of their last 6. They get SMU and BC at home this week.

16. Boston College (12-15, 4-12) NET – 195, RPI – 246

Last Week: 17

Boston College played some fine defense this week holding Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech to 90 total points. They have the west coast trip of Stanford and Cal in the week ahead.

15. NC State (11-16, 4-12) NET – 118, RPI – 223

Last week: 16

NC State is showing a little life having won 2 of their last 3. They go to Syracuse and Georgia Tech this week.

14. Syracuse (11-16, 5-11) NET – 147, RPI – 172

Last Week: 14

Syracuse is pushing hard to miss the ACC tournament after losing 3 games in a row. NC State is Wednesday, then have a game against Virginia Tech.

13. Notre Dame (12-15, 6-10) NET – 100, RPI – 191

Last Week : 13

Notre Dame must go to Clemson and Wake Forest this week. Good luck with that.

12. Virginia (13-14, 6-10) NET – 103, RPI – 119

Last Week: 10

Poor Virginia has to play desperate Wake Forest this week, and then host surging Clemson.

11. Virginia Tech (12-15, 7-9) NET – 158, RPI – 196

Last Week: 11

The Hokies only scored 36 points at BC, but won at Miami. They host Louisville and Syracuse this week.

10. Florida State (16-11, 7-9) NET – 88, RPI – 113

Last Week: 12

FSU could finish off UNC’s NCAA hopes on Monday. Then they play at red hot Duke.

9. Georgia Tech (13-14, 7-9) NET – 127, RPI – 199

Last Week: 8

Georgia Tech’s lack of depth due to injury makes it very difficult to overcome every game out. That said they are still dangerous. They are at Pitt and host NC State this upcoming week.

8. Pittsburgh (16-11, 7-9) NET – 55, RPI – 70

Last Week: 7

Pittsburgh’s freefall just continues. If they win out could they get on bubble? Georgia Tech and a game at Louisville is this week. A sweep especially with a win at Louisville would catch our attention.

7. Stanford (17-10, 9-7) NET – 85, RPI – 72

Last Week: 9

Stanford has just lost too many recent games to be on the bubble, but the NIT is in play. BC and SMU are this week.

6. Wake Forest (19-8, 10-6) NET – 63, RPI- 47

Last week: 4

Wake Forest took a devastating loss at NC State. All they can do now is win and hope. They better sweep Virginia and Notre Dame.

5. UNC (18-11, 11-6) NET – 44, RPI – 29

Last Week: 6

UNC has finally put a little run together winning 4 games in a row. After they beat FSU Monday, they should beat Miami this week to complete the sweep. They are quietly getting back into the NCAA tournament discussion, but need to keep winning.

—————————————————— NCAA Cutline —————————————————-

4. SMU (20-7, 11-5) NET – 39, RPI – 55

Last Week: 5

SMU couldn’t get that Q1 win over Clemson they needed so badly. I feel like SMU needs to win 3 of their last 4 games to make the NCAAs. The west coast swing of Cal and Stanford is this week.

3. Louisville (21-6, 14-2) NET – 24, RPI – 21

Last Week: 3

Louisville is just marching along 15-1 since that Kentucky loss in December. Virginia Tech and Pitt are this week.

2. Clemson (22-5, 14-2) NET – 22, RPI – 16

Last Week: 2

Clemson is simply playing great basketball right now. Notre Dame and Virginia are this week, and a sweep keeps Clemson moving toward the 4/5 seed line if they aren’t there already.

1. Duke (24-3, 15-1) NET – 2, RPI – 5

Last Week: 1

Duke hasn’t won a game by fewer than 18 points since losing to Clemson on Feb 8. They made Illinois a likely NCAA team look like a 1 vs 16 game in destroying them Saturday. Yep, they can win it all. Miami and FSU are this week.

Wake Forest did it again. They really did it again. With a NCAA At-Large bid within their grasp, they blew it. Playing a let’s be honest terrible NC State team, the Deacs seemed to take control of the game with 8 minutes left leading by 5. They collapsed and lost.

Just like the debacle against FSU a couple of games before. Wake Forest was even in better shape up by more than 15 with under 10 minutes to go, and lost. With a record of 19-8 (11-5) NET 62 and a 2-6 record against the Q1, Wake Forest is on the bubble, but they didn’t have to be.

They only had to beat two bad teams in the last 2 weeks, and even beating just 1 they could recover from, but both? That’s unforgivable.

It just seems to keep happening though.

In the 2023-2024 after beating a top 10 Duke, they went L, L, L to Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech to play themselves out of the NCAA tournament. The Georgia Tech loss was at home.

In the 2022-2023 season again on the bubble, Wake Forest lost 4 out of their last 5 games.

In the 2021-2022 season again on the bubble, Wake Forest lost at a Clemson team that was 8-12 in the league late in the year, then couldn’t beat a Boston College team in the ACCCT that finished the year 13-20.

Are we seeing a pattern here?

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.

That’s 4 years in a row, with different rosters, and different opponents, but the same Wake Forest head coach. Steve Forbes gets to the middle of February with Wake Forest in position to make the NCAA tournament, and then they start losing games they have no business losing to.

I don’t think Steve Forbes is a terrible coach. The Deacs are rarely truly awful, but if Wake Forest misses the NCAA tournament yet again, that would be 5 years under Forbes without an NCAA tournament appearance. That’s simply unacceptable, and Wake Forest may need to start thinking about moving in a new direction.

After NC State fell 97-73, the Wolfpack dropped to 10-16 (3-12) and is in serious danger of missing the ACC Tournament. It’s been a disastrous season for Kevin Keatts. This was a team picked 8th in the pre-season following an incredible run last March that saw NC State win the ACC and reach the Final 4.

Prior to that, Keatts had exactly 0 NCAA tournament wins in 6 seasons and likely would not have survived the season without that run.

So what we make of this season, that’s turned into a disaster?

There are a couple of recent examples.

Florida State football is a similar case. Mike Norvell went 13-0 during the regular season in 2023, and won an ACC Title only to be followed by a nightmare season next that saw him and FSU go 2-10.

Norvell will be back for FSU, but there will be immense pressure on him next season.

I think the same will be true for Keatts. Keatts won’t be fired after a Final 4 and ACC Title season, but the trainwreck of this year will leave NC State fans bristling. Former Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner won the ACC in 2021, after 4 pedestrian seasons. Then he had a bad 2022 and was fired in 2023.

If you’re looking at a timeline for Keatts there you have it. He better produce next season.

No one is going to argue that’s it’s been a largely a down year for ACC basketball outside of a handful of schools. The constant question is how did things get this bad?

The answer isn’t so complicated. No conference could withstand the losses of so many Hall of Fame coaches in such a short period of time. Coaches like Roy Williams, Coach K, Jim Boeheim, Rick Pitino, and Tony Bennett all won national titles. Jim Larranaga and Leonard Hamilton will be in the Hall of Fame too. It’s not just money either – UConn won the last two national titles, and the Big 12 has remained a top basketball conference even if they have been passed by SEC.

We haven’t even got to March yet, where the ACC has been the best-performing conference over the last several years, but what is the overall depth of the league? Will it be better in the future? I think yes and so better get the ACC now.

The ACC is tied with the Big 12 with 8 Five Star players for 2025. Duke has the number 1 class in the country coming in. SMU is number 3. Notre Dame is number 4. UNC is number 9, and Syracuse 10. That is half the top 10 in recruiting coming from the ACC.

Looking further Georgia Tech is 22. That gives the ACC 6 top 25 classes. That’s tops in the country. Now how you do in the transfer portal will be key, and we’re just getting going for 2025, but the recruiting classes look good.

What about replacing all those coaches?

Pat Kelsey of Louisville looks like a home run hire, as he inherited a trainwreck left behind by Kenny Payne and could be your national coach of the year, at the very least the ACC COY for having Louisville 20-6 (13-2) and headed to the NCAA tournament.

SMU hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2017, and first-year coach Andy Enifield has them right on the bubble at 19-6 (10-4).

With Stanford, it’s been even longer, no NCAA appearance since 2014, and not even more than 16 wins since 2020. First-year coach Kyle Smith is having a solid 16-10 (8-7) season. That was for a team that was pre-season picked at or near the bottom of the ACC.

Clemson isn’t replacing anyone, but the patience to stay with Brad Brownell has resulted in Clemson’s best back-to-back seasons of basketball since at least the late 90s.

We also know North Carolina could turn things around quickly. UNC was ranked in the top 5 and a number 1 NCAA seed as recently as last year.

While it has been a rough ACC basketball season, don’t write off the future of ACC basketball just yet.
