Meet Boo Corrigan NC State’s new Athletic Director

NC State has their new Athletic Director, and it’s Boo Corrigan. With Debbie Yow retiring, NC State hired a search firm, to the consternation of Jay Bilas and others, to arrive at Mr. Corrigan. The hire has been lauded around the country, and for the first time NC State doesn’t seem to be absorbing shots about how we are an unrealistic fan base.

Now, Corrigan has the ACC ties that are important for AD’s to have. Boo’s father is a former Commissioner of the ACC. He worked as an Associate AD at Duke, he worked as an Associate AD at Notre Dame. So he has worked around the conference and understands the ins and outs of the schools involved. He understands and can navigate the egos and fan bases that are in the ACC. For the last 8 years he’s been at Army.

Mr. Corrgian’s run at Army has been nothing less then remarkable. Some people believe that the mark of a good is the hire’s he makes. I disagree with this sentiment, the biggest job an AD has is fund raising. The AD needs to generate the revenue to fund scholarships, facility upgrades, and manage the business side of major college athletics. Here is where Corrigan’s expertise is going to benefit NC State.

While at Army, Corrigan was able to add sports to the Athletic Department. He also oversaw the building of a new Lacrosse Center and a new soccer field. He was able to increase the Army A Club (Army’s version of the Wolfpack Club) by 16%. Corrigan was able to increase revenue by 146% and increased the endowments at Army. He’s done all of this at ARMY! Let’s be fair, Army does not have the alumni base, or the billionaire donors that other schools have. Army has a built in disadvantage in the financial part of athletics, but Corrigan succeeded in increasing the money that is generated by the Athletic Department.

When looking at what Boo Corrigan at Army, with the ability to generate more revenue, and upgrading facilities you have to be happy with the hire. With the ACC Network set to debut in the fall of 2019 NC State is going to have an influx of funds. If Corrigan is able to generate only half of the increase in revenue he generated at Army, NC State is going to have decisions to make in terms of how to spend that money.
