Syracuse
After a 10-3 2018 season, and a top 25 2019 preseason ranking, Syracuse and coach Dino Babers looked ready to take off. Not only did that not happen, but many felt the Orange were the ACC’s most disappointing team after a 5-7 (2-6) season. Dino Babers is one of the most respected coaches in the ACC, and his team is still the last ACC team to beat Clemson. Dino Babers first two years were 4-8 records. Those were understandably rebuilding seasons, but who is Syracuse really? Are they the 2018 version or the 2019 version?
Will Go 7-4 (6-4) if:
The defense significantly improves. Syracuse ranked a dreadful 115th in the nation on defense in 2019. I’m skeptical that can happen with the majority of the defense gone, and a defensive coaching transition. I’m more optimistic on the offense. QB Tommy DeVito has ability, and we know Dino Babers can coach offense. I expect a big improvement on that side of the ball. If the offense can outscore teams early, until the defense settles in Syracuse can surprise. Syracuse opens at North Carolina, then at Syracuse, with Georgia, Duke, and Liberty at home. Can Syracuse steal a game or two to start the year 4-1? If a game is close Andre Szmyt is one of the best kickers in college football. Andre Cisco at Safety has All-American ability.
Will Go 4-7 (4-6) if:
Syracuse doesn’t have a bit of good luck. Let’s face it, the schedule is brutal. Syracuse has to play North Carolina, Clemson, and Notre Dame. I expect all losses there, so Syracuse will need to go 6-2 the rest of the way just to have a winning record. For team with so many question marks that’s a tall order. Syracuse’s leading rusher and receiver are gone. The defense is getting revamped, and the offense may be more settled, but was still not what we’d expect from a Dino Babers coached team. I’d get very concerned if I were a Syracuse fan if the Orange drop either of the early games (Georgia Tech or Duke) on their schedule.
