ACC Mid-Season Coach of the Year Candidates

Podcast co-host @AllSportsDACC started talking about the ACC COY candidates on twitter. That got me thinking, it’s time to list our candidates. Amazing, we’ve reached the midpoint of the college football season already. Who’s leading the ACC COY race?

Let’s take a look.

1) Mario Cristobal – Miami

Miami is 5-0 and ranked in the top 3 in the country. Miami has made it through the toughest portion of its schedule without a loss. They’ve beaten Notre Dame, South Florida, Florida, and Florida State. Three of those opponents were ranked at the time they played. You have the best team in the conference and maybe the best team in the country, and you have yet to lose? That’s why Cristobal tops this list.

2) Brent Key – Georgia Tech

At 6-0 and already bowl eligible, Georgia Tech is off to its best start in nearly 15 years. It hasn’t always been pretty, but the name of the game is to win, and Georgia Tech is doing just that while being ranked in the top 15. Brent Key’s Georgia Tech rebuild continues in Atlanta.

3) Tony Elliot – Virginia

Tony Elliot has done a wonderful job at Virginia this year. Pre-season picked #14 in the ACC, Elliot has Virginia 5-1 (3-0) and real threat to reach the ACC Championship game. The offense is arguably the ACC’s best.

4) Jake Dickert – Wake Forest

Wake Forest 1st first-year head coach Jake Dickert deserves some recognition. The Deacs were pre-season picked 16th in the ACC, but are off to a 4-2 (1-2) start and very much eyeing a bowl game. Wake Forest has already matched their win total each of the last 2 years of 4 wins. If Wake Forest makes a bowl game, then Dickert will get some ACC COY Votes.

5) Manny Diaz – Duke

If you thought Duke was going to back up after a 9-win 2024, think again. Yes, they didn’t play well in losses to Illinois and Tulane, but they are looking very good in ACC play. Duke is 4-2 (3-0) and is in position to make a run at the ACCCG. Their worst football seems to be behind them, and they will be one tough out the rest of the way.
