We ask the three biggest ACC basketball questions for this week.
Does Clemson lose their first game this week?
Clemson has been the ACC’s most consistent and I would say best team. At 9-0, they will lose a game eventually. Will it be this week? They get a NCAA Tournament caliber opponent in Memphis on Saturday. Memphis already has wins against Missouri and Arkansas. They are athletic and have some length, but Clemson already beat a somewhat similar team in Alabama on the road. This might be a bit much for Clemson to win at Alabama and Memphis. Should they win put them in the top 10.
How much would a win over Kentucky mean for UNC?
North Carolina isn’t missing the NCAA tournament this year barring a catastrophe and unexpected collapse. The Heels already have wins over Arkansas and Tennessee to prove their NCAA worth, but are they a top 4 seed or 8/9 seed type team? Playing a good Kentucky team at a neutral site is a great test for the Heels. UNC is an excellent team, but against UCONN we saw where UNC lacks on the defensive end. If UNC beats Kentucky, it would be enormous and prove that UNC is a bonafide Elite 8 caliber team.
Who’s in the most trouble with a potential loss this week?
When we talk about dangerous potential losses, we aren’t talking about Hofstra and Duke-type games which no one would see coming, we’re talking about the game you probably “should” win. Florida State has been erratic at best this season. They won a pre-season tournament that included a victory over a good Colorado team (just ask Miami) and we thought it might propel FSU. It didn’t as they lost 3 games in a row, blowing a 17-point second-half lead to Georgia at home. Then they got blown out by South Florida who was 2-4 coming into the game. Look only Louisville and Notre Dame are pretty much totally off the post-season radar, but if FSU loses to 6-4 SMU to go on a 4 game losing streak – oh boy they are in big trouble and the heat will grow on Leonard Hamilton.
