We’re almost at the mid-point of the season, and it’s been a while since we’ve checked in our coaching hotseat rankings. Already one ACC coach has been let go. Who needs to be on alert?
We go from the coldest to the hottest.
0 – Ice Cold
1 – Still cool
2 – There’s smoke
3 – Getting Warm
4 – On Fire
5 – Start working on the resume
Philip Montgomery, Virginia Tech = 1.75
Brent Pry was let go at Virginia Tech, and Philip Montgomery was named interim head coach. It’s an uphill battle to go from interim to permanent, but it can be done. He’s 2-1 so far.
Frank Reich, Stanford = 1.75
There’s not a lot of talent at Stanford but interim HC Frank Reich and all his experience have a couple of wins this year, and have played competitive football.
Mike Norvell, Florida State = 2
Yes you beat Alabama to open the season, since then you lost in OT to Virginia and your most fierce rival Miami is better than you after a 2 – 10 2024. There’s some grumbling, and you’ve lost 9 of your last 10 ACC games.
Justin Wilcox, California = 2
The 4-2 start for Cal has cooled where Wilcox was coming into the season, but there has still has been only 1 winning season since 2017. The second half of the season will decide whether Wilcox survives.
Bill O’Brien, Boston College – 2
Boll O’Brien has a wealth of coaching experience at the Collegiate and NFL levels, but so far at BC he’s 8-9 (4-6). That’s not he was hired for.
Bill Belichick, UNC = 2.5
From all the off-season stuff to just being a bad football team, there’s a lot of not good press surrounding Bill Belichick right now. He won’t be fired no matter what happens this year, but there are already whispers of a failed experiment.
Dave Doeren, NC State = 2.5
Dave Doeren went 6-7 last year after a series of 8-9 win seasons since 2017 with only the 2019 failing to meet that win total. The Wolfpack are 4-2, with an ugly home loss to Virginia Tech.
Part Narduzzi, Pittsburgh = 3.5
Since starting last 7-0, Pitt is 3-8 with 1 P4 win. It sure feels like Pitt peaked a few years back. Things are just stale in Pittsburgh.
