We are starting to get an idea of ACC men’s basketball coaches that are starting to feel the hot seat and which ones are in good shape. We’ll start with coaches 9-18
What does that look light two-thirds of the way into the season?
We go from the coldest to the hottest.
0 – Ice Cold
1 – Still cool
2 – There’s smoke
3 – Getting Warm
4 – On Fire
5 – Start working on the resume
Adrian Autry, Syracuse = 2.5
Following a legend like Jim Boheim is never easy, but Adrian Autry had a decent 20 win season in 2023-2024. This year’s 9-11 (3-6) has been disappointing. Individually this team has some talent but is lacking overall. Let’s see what happens in year 3.
Michah Shrewsberry, Notre Dame = 2.5
Michah Shrewsberry and Notre Dame have had their share of injuries this year, but that didn’t derail some other coaches we’ll see later on this list. This is not the second season Irish fans were hoping to see under Shrewsberry. He’ll get a year 3, and like a couple of other coaches that’s where he has to produce.
Damon Stoudamire, Georgia Tech = 2.5
Georgia Tech has been beset by a rash of injuries this year, but Damon Stoudamire’s second year still has left Jacket fans frustrated. A good recruiting class is coming in, and year 3 will tell the tale of where Georgia Tech is really headed under Stoudamire.
Mark Madson, California = 2.5
California looks pretty much the same in year 2 under Mark Madson as year in 1 even though the conferences changed. It remains to be seen if Madson can turn Cal around, but he’ll get another year.
Steve Forbes, Wake Forest = 2.75
When is Steve Forbes going to turn Wake Forest from just pretty good to one that makes the NCAA tournament? He’s on the bubble again this season. If the Deacs miss the Big Dance that will be all 5 years under Forbes without a tournament appearance.
Hubert Davis, UNC = 2.75
Hubert Davis has a Final 4 and a Sweet 16 in his first 3 years at UNC, but other than the 2021-2022 season, Davis’s tenure has been marked by underachievement including this year so far. If the Heels miss the NCAA tournament, it could get ugly for Davis.
Leonard Hamilton, Florida State = 3
This will likely be the 4th straight year Florida State misses the NCAA tournament. The team isn’t awful, but things sure seem stale with FSU men’s basketball under Leonard Hamilton.
Earl Grant, Boston College = 3.5
Now in his 4th season at Boston College, the Eagle’s barring a miracle will miss the NCAA tournament once again. BC has yet to finish above .500 in the ACC and won’t this year again.
Ron Sanchez, Virginia = 4.5
Ron Sanchez had to take over as interim head coach from the legendary Tony Bennett, and it hasn’t gone well. The Hoos are near the bottom of the ACC and are a shell of Bennett’s teams. It’s hard to see him being retained past this season.
Bill Courtney, Miami = 5
Bill Courtney took over as interim head coach at Miami after Jim Larranaga’s departure. The Cane’s are the worst team in the ACC by a healthy margin. Virtually no chance that the interim tag comes off and we see him coach Miami next year.
