ACC Team of the Week : SMU – for a 38-6 win over Cal for an undefeated ACC regular season.
17. Florida State (2-10)
Last Week: 17
Florida State wasn’t just bad, they Bad News Bears bad. Each game out was a comedy of errors. It was just a nightmare season on every level for Florida State. Mike Norvell is on the hotseat for next year.
16. Stanford (3-9)
Last Week: 16
Stanford was one weird team. They went 3-9, but beat Louisville and Syracuse. They finished with a loss to San Jose St.
15. Wake Forest (4-8)
Last Week: 15
If really does feel like Dave Clawson peaked at Wake Forest a few years back. They competed with Duke, but lost on a last second play.
14. Virginia (5-7)
Last Week: 12
I think Tony Elliot will return, but it’s bowl or bust next year – has to be.
13. North Carolina (6-6)
Last Week: 11
North Carolina will go to bowl, but they went 3-6 in their final 9 games and fired Mack Brown.
12. Virginia Tech (6-6)
Last Week: 14
Virginia Tech could beat Virginia if they were 11-0 and the Hokies were 0-11. They did it again this weekend.
11. California (6-6)
Last Week: 10
Cal was blown out by SMU 38-6. Good thing that bowl was locked up already.
10. NC State (6-6)
NC State ruins Mack Brown’s final game as UNC head coach with a 35-30 comeback win.
Last Week: 13
9. Pitt (7-5)
Last week: 6
Pitt gets to be the owner of one of the ACC’s biggest second-half collapses in recent memory -> from 7-0, to 7-5.
8. Boston College (7-5)
Last Week: 10
Boston College added to Pitt’s miserable finish winning 34-23. A bowl in Bill O’Brien’s first year.
7. Georgia Tech (7-5)
Last Week : 5
Georgia Tech had a program-defining win in their grasp, but couldn’t finish off Georgia losing in 8 OTs. Those chances don’t come often, so you can’t let them get away. An 8 win season would still mean something so the bowl game matters.
6. Louisville (8-4)
Last Week: 6
Louisville thrashed Kentucky and finished with a solid 8-4 season despite some up-and-down play this year. They’ll await their bowl destination.
5. Duke (9-3)
Last Week: 4
I had to drop Duke through no fault of their own with Syracuse’s great win, but it’s been a great first season for Manny Diaz leading Duke to a 9-3 regular season.
4. Clemson (9-3)
Last Week: 3
Clemson must have 9 lives, because they keep failing on the big stage, but their playoff hopes won’t die. QB Cade Klubnik fell apart in the 4th qtr, and Clemson lost a 4th qtr lead to South Carolina. If Clemson can beat SMU, it would be their first win over a team with a legitimate pulse.
3. Miami (10-2)
Last Week: 2
Miami controlled their path to the playoffs and ACC Title game, but the 2 decades of ACC underachievement keeps going. They still have a chance as an at-large playoff team, but it doesn’t seem likely.
2. Syracuse (9-3)
Last week: 7
Syracuse finished the season winning their final 3 games, including eliminating Miami from the ACC Title game. What a first year for Fran Brown.
1. SMU (11-1)
Last Week: 1
SMU is rolling into the ACC Championship game 11-1. Even with a loss they can start thinking playoffs.
