Did Miami’s defense turn the corner against Wake Forest?

Miami’s defense is ranked in the top 25, but I think we realized in the last couple of months it’s been a liability.

With Heisman contender QB Cam Ward and a spectacular offense, the Hurricanes have mostly survived their defensive issues. Only Georgia Tech was able to finish off the Canes.

What could the Canes be with a defense they can at least somewhat trust?

Saturday we got an idea as Miami beat Wake Forest 42-14 and held a decent, obviously not great Deac offense to under 200 yards and 2 turnovers.

This is meaningful for a team that came within 1 play of losing to Virginia Tech, Cal, and Louisville.

Since then Miami ran away and hid from Florida State, a quality Duke team, and Saturday against Wake Forest. In the last month, Georgia Tech proved to be more of a blip than a collapse as what would have happened in years past.

Miami is in 10-1 and will likely be ranked no worse than 7 in the next CFP poll, and probably 6th. After the chaos of Saturday with 7 ranked teams losing, the Canes probably only need to beat Syracuse and get to the ACC Title to ensure their entry into the college football playoff.

Of course that is easier said than done, and the best indication if Miami’s defense has truly arrived will be an extremely dangerous trip to Syracuse.

Syracuse is a surprising 8-3, with a top 25 offense, and a QB in Kyle McCord that can absolutely light up defenses.

Miami controls their own destiny to the playoff. What more can they ask for?

Now they just have to go out and prove it and Syracuse will be a real litmus test.
