Well, there have been two weeks worth of the new College Football rankings, and I think it’s been much better than the previous 4 Team Playoff. Here are the latest rankings.

Let’s get the gripes out of the way first. Do you see a Top 25 win on the resume of either Texas or Penn State? Explain why they are ahead of Indiana or BYU and ahead of SMU by so much. There are 9 SEC teams in the poll and 4 of the top 5 are Big 10 teams. We knew it would happen, but the polls are indeed a SEC Big 10 lovefest.
That said here’s the beauty of it. In years past we’d be looking at 3 Big 10 teams and 1 SEC team in the playoff. The Big 12 and ACC would be on the outside looking in. They are not now.
There will be a representative from both conferences. Four teams can play their way in, and several are still mathematically alive.
Even the SEC could have as many six 10-2 teams, and all but probably Missouri can still reach the playoff.
From an ACC perspective… Clemson took a loss early in the year to Georgia and were in position at #11 last week to get into position for at large bid if not the ACC Title. Miami was in the top 4. They controlled their own destiny to the playoff.
Clemson can only blame themselves for losing at home to Louisville. Miami can only blame themselves for losing at Georgia Tech.
On the other hand, if you’re upset that SMU should be higher than 14 – well SMU can play their way into the playoff as they lead the ACC.
I was a skeptic of the new format. Maybe it would diminish the regular season. It hasn’t diminished it, it has enhanced it.
Let’s hope the powers that be continue this format past 2026, because they finally got it right.
