Georgia Tech’s win over Miami was one of those wins, you don’t believe unless you watched it.
The Jackets had to shuffle a limited quarterback, Haynes King, and a freshman quarterback, Anthony Philo. They lost their top running back, Jamal Haynes, early in the game. The defense had LB Kyle Efford playing hurt and a number of other injuries—so many that I lost count.
On paper, Georgia Tech had no business competing with a Miami team in the top 5. It’s a good thing they don’t play games on paper.
Georgia Tech came up with a performance that was a masterpiece of coaching and immense heart.
HC Brent Key, OC Buster Faulkner, and DC Tyler Santucci called one of the best games I’ve ever seen from a Georgia Tech staff.
The offense ran for a whopping 271 yards and held the ball for nearly 35 minutes without a turnover. QB Haynes King clearly could not get the ball downfield but was sublime in the running game. QB Aaron Philo showed what he was capable of, showing composure in a number of critical plays.
The defense did what I didn’t think was possible. No team had held Miami under 36 points all season, but Georgia Tech did with sure tackling, a refusal to give up many big plays, and blitz calls that were straight out of the Jon Tenuta days.
It was the best DC called game I’ve seen from an ACC team since Bud Foster and Virginia Tech won at Ohio State in 2014.
Miami still has to wonder about their defense, that a Georgia Tech team that only threw for 99 yards could run at will and the Canes D couldn’t force a turnover.
It’s a tough task to fall behind game after game and put it on QB Cam Ward and that offense to bail you out. Eventually, it will catch up with you, and figured it would at some point unless that defense started to figure things out.
Georgia Tech became the team to finally knock off the Canes, and it will go down as one of the Jacket’s greatest wins in their rich football history.
Oh, it also got them bowl-eligible for the 2nd year in a row proving even with some hiccups, Key is moving the program forward.
