Make no mistake Tony Elliot is a good guy, with a successful pedigree in coaching. He was part of Clemson’s coaching staff during their dynastic run from 2015-2020. His job to rebuild Virginia was not going to be an easy one, and he’s dealt with a significant off-the-field tragedy involving his team.
He’s gotten a long leash and he’s deserved it, but time is running out on him. Year 3 at Virginia was expected to see major progress going forward maybe even a bowl game.
Saturday Virginia was blasted at home 41-14 by a UNC team that was reeling themselves coming into the game. This was most winnable game in their final 6 games.
Now Virginia has to find 2 wins in a finish with top 20 Pittsburgh, top 20 Notre Dame, top 25 SMU, and surging Virginia Tech on the road. Oh my, Virginia will be big underdogs in all four, and the likelihood of making a bowl looks really slim.
How do you only have 7 yards rushing and 288 total against a UNC defense that had been shredded to pieces several weeks in a row? Ok we have to give credit to Mack Brown and maligned DC Geoff Collins for one of their best efforts of the year. That’s what Virginia needed today, and they didn’t get it and that falls on Tony Elliot.
Elliot is 10-20 (5-15) in his tenure at Virginia, that’s not good enough so far and without some upsets in November might not be enough to retain Elliot.
If he is retained with a 4 or 5-win season, the next season would certainly be a make-or-break season for Elliot.
