With all do respect to Colorado’s Travis Hunter, the Heisman chase is a two-man race. Hunter is a fine player, but I can’t put him in the category where I think his absence is difference-making to Colorado’s team. He’s also been dealing with injury issues.
There could be someone else who steps up in the second half of the season, but it sure feels like the Heisman is down to Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty and Miami QB Cam Ward. I suppose it’s only a matter of time before SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and Big 10 Commissioner Tony Pettiti collude to try to ensure some rules about only SEC and Big 10 players being eligible for the Heisman.
Until that happens though, there’s not a SEC or Big 10 player on the radar.
Ashton Jeanty is having the kind of season at RB, that reminds you of Barry Sanders. He already has over 1200 yards rushing for nearly 10 yards a carry and 17 TD through 7 games. Against top 5 Oregon, he ran for 192. He’s the real deal for a 5-1 Boise State.
If you don’t have Jeanty, though Cam Ward is the difference between Miami being 7-0 and 4-3 maybe 3-4.
Ward has thrown for 2219 yards completing nearly 70% of his passes and accounted for 23 touchdowns. Miami needs every bit of it too as the defense has given 117 points in its last three games.
When Miami needs a drive, Cam Ward provides it. When Miami needs a play Cam Ward comes up with one.
He’s guiding the number 1 offense in college football. For that matter Jeanty and Bosie State are number 3.
Both have their teams in position for a playoff spot.
Saturday Ward led Miami to a 52-45 win at Louisville, even as the Canes special teams and defense gave up big play after big play, as he accounted for another 300+ yard game and 4 more TDs.
Miami hasn’t had a Heisman winner since QB Gino Torretta in 1992. Cam Ward just might be the next one.
