SMU in throttling of Florida State is one of ACC’s most improved teams since Game 1.

Outside of Clemson who’s mowing down opponents since their early loss to Georgia, SMU is the ACC’s most improved team. Early in the year, SMU’s near loss to a bad Nevada team in the open set off all kinds of warning flags.

There was an ugly 18-15 loss to BYU at home, but it turns out BYU might be pretty good, especially with the Mustang QB position in flux at the time. Since then SMU has scored 108 points in beating TCU 66-42 and Florida State 42-16.

Against Florida State, the Mustangs were completely locked in front of an energetic home crowd. Now FSU is a bad football team. We all realize that, but defensively they had been pretty good. SMU rolled up 467 yards with 213 on the ground.

Many wondered if SMU had the depth to play in a P4 league at this time. I think the answer is that they can compete. What SMU did on Saturday wasn’t a fluke. They looked faster, deeper, and more well-coached than Florida State. Does SMU have more NFL talent than Florida State? Maybe not, but they sure were the better team.

Coach Rhett Lashlee made the tough decision to change QBs going with Kevin Jennings over the previous starter Presten Strone and it’s ignited the offense. Mike Norvell might want to take notes. FSU’s season is already in shambles at 1-4, but a QB change from DJ Uiagalelei might be in order. Hey, you have to do something Mike?

A game with at Louisville is next, and that won’t be an easy task overall though the schedule is manageable. Could we really think about SMU going 9-3 or 10-2? It’s certainly a distinct possibility, especially with the confidence and execution they are starting to display.

As an addition to the ACC, SMU has acquitted itself quite nicely so far.
