ACC Football Coach Hotseat Rankings through one-fourth of season (10-17)

We last looked at the ACC Hotseat Rankings in the Summer. Since then we’ve had the spring, and 3 new programs have entered the ACC. How are those hot seat rankings looking as we’re only weeks from the season?

We go from the coldest to the hottest.

0 – Ice Cold

1 – Still cool

2 – There’s smoke

3 – Getting Warm

4 – On Fire

5 – Start working on the resume

Dave Clawson, Wake Forest = 1.75

Previous – 1.5

Wake Forest is a lot more forgiving than most places, but the 1-2 start following a 4-8 2023 is starting to make Deac fans nervous.

Justin Wilcox, California = 1.75

Previous – 3.75

Justin Wilcox has been the epitome of mediocre in his tenure at Cal. This year they are 3-0 with a win at Auburn. That’s how you get off the hotseat.

Mario Cristobal, Miami = 1.75

Previous – 4

Miami is 3-0, destroyed Florida in the Swamp and is flirting with the top 10. Cam Ward is starting to get into the Heisman discussion. Cristobal’s seat was hot coming into the season, but it’s cooling off fast.

Mack Brown, UNC – 2

Previous – 3.5

You start 3-0, you start 3-0. UNC has nice win at Minnesota,  and they are managing the loss of starting QB Max Johnson so far. With Brown it hasn’t been the starts, it been the second half of the seasons.

Mike Norvell, Florida State – 2

Previous – 0

How do you go from Ice Cold – to starting to feel smoke in just 3 games? How about losing all 3 as a favorite, and basically going from the top 10 to the worst team in the ACC. Norvell won’t be fired even if FSU goes winless, but things will ramp up with each loss.

Dave Doeren, NC State = 2.25

Previous = 1

Dave Doeren has built some equity with his consistent winning of the last few years, but this year’s start is not good. There were struggles against Western Carolina and Louisiana Tech. Then there was the national TV debacle against Tennesee.

Troy Taylor, Stanford = 2.5

Previous = 2.5

Stanford was a competitive in a loss to TCU, and defeated Cal Poly. I haven’t seen enough from Stanford to change Taylors status after last year’s 3-9 season.

Tony Elliot, Virginia = 2.75

Previous = 3

There are only 6 wins in two years, but the 2-1 start gives at least some hope including a road ACC win at Wake Forest. Virginia was in the game with Maryland, but just ran out of gas.
